Intro for August 11, 2025
Dear Gossips,
New week, new check-in on the question I’ve been asking rhetorically for almost two months now: has Kpop Demon Hunters peaked yet? The answer is no, not even close.
The movie Netflix’s biggest animated original film of all time. The soundtrack is holding at #2 on the Billboard 200, as weekly sales continue to rise – “every week for six straight weeks”. It’s the first soundtrack of the streaming era to debut in the top 10. The standout on the soundtrack, of course, is “Golden”. Last week, “Golden” was #1 on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart and making history in the process.

Which means it’s challenging for top spot on the Billboard 100, the crown jewel for singles. Many are projecting that “Golden” will indeed get there when Billboard makes their weekly announcement later today and, in the process, match its own lyrics: “We’re going up, up, up, it’s our moment!”
Please note, this is not official at the time of this writing, and it’s supposed to be a close contest between “Golden” and Alex Warren’s “Ordinary”, but it would be an extraordinary achievement for a movie soundtrack, when you consider that “Let It Go” only peaked at #5. And it’s not just “Golden”. Almost all the songs from Kpop Demon Hunters are charting.
All 9 tracks off of the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ soundtrack are expected to re-peak or reach new peaks on this week’s Billboard Hot 100.

At this point, at least on the music side, Kpop Demon Hunters should definitely be in the Oscar conversation. And speaking of Oscars, the Academy is launching its first group of digital screeners this coming Friday and the movie is part of the first wave – so Netflix is campaigning early, putting in the effort to make as many Academy voters aware of the movie as possible. Will the Oscars in 2026 be totally Kpopped?
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
