Intro for September 8, 2025
Dear Gossips,
The Creative Arts Emmys happened over a busy weekend in film, television, and music with the MTV VMAs last night, the Venice Film Festival wrapping up, the first few days of TIFF, and so much more. The Emmys are now six days away so much of the focus as we approach Sunday will be back in Hollywood and the awards that have now been handed out have given us yet another indication that it’s a tight race in the Outstanding Drama category.
We always knew that Severance would be a frontrunner for best drama and the series now already has six Emmys coming out of the weekend, including Guest Actress in a Drama Series, Merritt Wever. The Pitt, however, has been one of the surprises of the season after its January premiere and the show took home two Emmys, in the Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Shawn Hatosy and, notably, in the casting category. Casting can be a bellwether of how the Television Academy is leaning and, as we’ve been saying all summer, The Pitt in its first season could pull an upset. If Shawn Hatosy is the Emmy favourite in the guest category, it’s now looking very promising for Noah Wyle in the leading actor category, which I know is good news for the passionate fans of The Pitt who read this site.
It's also quite competitive in the Limited Series category between The Penguin and Adolescence. While The Penguin won more Emmys on the weekend than Adolescence, Adolescence won for casting which could give it a slight edge.
And in comedy, The Studio picked up ten Emmys this weekend, including Guest Actor for Bryan Cranston, further establishing itself as the favourite. At least one “Sal Saperstein” moment seems assured… right?
We have a lot to get to today – MTV VMAs and TIFF reviews coming up!
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
