Timothée Chalamet: Still East
According to the betting people, Timothée Chalamet is no longer the favourite to win the best actor Oscar and is currently sitting in second after Michael B Jordan. Whether or not that actually plays out on Sunday night remains to be seen. That said… if the category is best actor of gossip, Timmy continues to be the main character because he is the biggest story of Oscar week right now after his comments disrespecting ballet and opera have gone viral, with everyone lining up to take shots at him.
The ladies at The View called him “vapid” and “shallow” on the show yesterday, which means the aunties aren’t happy with him, and even Jeopardy! joined in on the mass Timmy bashing, which I guess suggests the smartypants don’t care for him either.
Every major media outlet has now covered the Timmy vs ballet and opera beef, LOL, and other celebrities have also weighed in. Like Jamie Lee Curtis, Doja Cat, and Patton Oswalt who made a joke about Timmy during his monologue at the MPSE Golden Reel Awards last night.
“Thank God we’re here to celebrate achievement in sound editing and not watching ballet or the opera. Thank God we are actually watching something that deserves to be alive.”
In the site intro today, I posted about Conan O’Brien’s Oscar hosting preparations and how he’s been testing out his jokes. Will Timmy make it into Conan’s Oscar monologue? Conan is known for being able to find the line between being mean and kissing ass. If there’s anyone who can find a way to mock Timmy and the mess he’s created for himself, without humiliating an Oscar nominee, it’s going to be him.
Meanwhile, as noted yesterday, Timmy’s schedule has taken him East while all this is blowing up in the west. Today he continues his first press tour in China and it’s been a charm offensive. Here he is at the premiere in Beijing test driving a scalp massager.

He was also very accommodating on the red carpet with local media, and in keeping with local customs, much of his content is being posted on Xiaohongshu, aka RedNote, including this vlog where he’s shopping, speaking Mandarin, and dance-exercising with the OGs in the park – again, engaging with Chinese habits and traditions.

And Timmy showed up at a Marty Supreme pop-up, it looked like there were a pretty healthy crowd there, all of them enthusiastic about his presence. He signed autographs, posed for photos, behaving in a way a Chinese celebrity might behave – because if any of them tried to pull some Hollywood sh-t or speak arrogantly about any aspect of their culture, they’d be disappeared faster than the time it takes to ChatGPT an apology.
East Asia, then, has been much more welcoming to Timmy than he would be at home. Right now he might want to stay a little longer.
