Gwyneth Paltrow: Caviar and Rings
It’s been 48 hours since PEOPLE Magazine revealed its cover story for the week featuring an exclusive excerpt from Amy Odell’s Gwyneth: The Biography, which comes out on Tuesday 29 July. Gossipy details from the excerpt about Gwyneth’s relationship with Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, and Madonna have been making headlines ever since. And, as the kids say, the tea has been piping hot.
We’re getting insight on how Gwyneth had concerns about Brad’s lack of sophistication and an example about his caviar ignorance, lol. We now know, at least during their relationship, that Ben is skilled in the art of cunnilingus. And, of course, we’re finally getting specific on why G and Madonna broke up, complete with a description of a dinner that happened on holiday during which Gwyneth and Chris Martin judged Madonna for how she was treating her daughter Lourdes. This is some good sh-t!
And yet…
It’s been quiet on Gwyneth’s side. Her reps have not issued any statements shutting down the reporting in Amy’s book. Nor have any “sources close to her” taken any denials to other publications. As I wrote in my post about this on Wednesday, Amy’s previous book about Anna Wintour was “rigorously reported” with 250 interviews and Anna’s unofficial endorsement, since it was her office who provided a list of friends and colleagues for Amy to connect with. The point I was making is that, presumably, Amy might have had the same access to Gwyneth – which could explain why she’s not distancing herself from the claims made in the book. Her silence, then, should it continue, legitimises the book.
So what else is in the book?
The caviar anecdote made me think of Gwyneth’s engagement ring from Brad Pitt. Probably because I did a shoot a couple of months ago on celebrity engagement ring trends with a jewellery designer, specialising in engagement rings. My husband proposed to me with a small diamond – what influencers would consider “insignificant” in size, ha. We were in our 20s and we were poor AF, whatever I love it and wear it every day. On our tenth anniversary, Jacek gave me a ring with a bigger diamond. That was in 2011, and I also love it, and I wear it on special occasions or when there’s a theme, like an engagement ring shoot. On the shoot, the jeweller essentially told me that my bigger diamond ring was old-fashioned and not in a cool way. He wasn’t mean about it, it was funny, I didn’t mind, so please don’t be mad at him. This is his art and his business and he’s the expert on what’s classic, what’s current, and what isn’t and will never be, like my anniversary ring, hahahahaha. Basically my anniversary ring is the kitten heel of diamond rings, LOL FOREVER, I am crying.
For what it’s worth, everyone these days is asking for marquise or pear cuts. For the record, my personal favourite is emerald cut.
Anyyyyyway, back to Gwyneth, and why I’m telling you all this. Because if she was put off by the fact that Brad Pitt didn’t know the difference between beluga and osetra caviar, do you think she would have been judgy about her engagement ring? Here they are in 1997 with their matching haircuts and she’s wearing the ring. Gold band, square cut.

A closer look:

How would Gwyneth Paltrow in 1997 have assessed this ring? Would it have been stylish and sophisticated enough for her? Not sure if this will be covered in Amy Odell’s Gwyneth: The Biography but maybe we’ll find out whether or not she gave it back.
Let me end on a brag…
I did a reel for ETALK’s Instagram the other day and Amy reposted it to her stories – with a note for me! Your girl is quoted in the book!
