This is a click-baity headline. I’m sorry about that. But also I’m not lying. Let’s back up a bit first though. Because you know what we’re living through right now? We are in a full-blown rom-com resurgence, you guys! Kumail Nanjiani’s The Big Sick made us hungry for it. And this summer, Love, Simon, Set It Up, Book Club, Crazy Rich Asians, and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before have all delivered. Do you see a pattern? They said that the rom-com was dead. The reason there’s been a renaissance, however, is because the new batch of rom-coms follows the formula we know, only the stories are centered around people who were never featured prominently during the old rom-com wave: older women, gay teens, people of colour… and dark and twisty 90s icons?
We’re not done yet. There are more rom-coms on the way before the summer of 2018 is over. One is Sierra Burgess is a Loser, which Kathleen mentions in the previous post starring our new boyfriend, Noah Centineo aka PETER KAVINSKY MY EVERYTHING, featuring a high school girl, Shannon Purser in the Cyrano de Bergerac role. And the other is called Destination Wedding, starring Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves, not exactly the Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey of their era. But here we are, about to enjoy what we need, even though we didn’t know this is what we needed. Destination Wedding opens August 24. So Winona and Keanu are now on promotion. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly Winona says that she and Keanu got married on the set of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Musing about her feelings on weddings alongside Reeves, Ryder told EW, “We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life.”
“In that scene, Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest,” she added. “We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”
Reeves took the news in stride and joked, “It’s lovely to see you again.” But Ryder reminded him that they went through the entire ceremony and said their “I dos.”
When Reeves asked, “We said yes?” Ryder responded, “Don’t you remember that? It was on Valentine’s Day.” This left Reeves no choice but to conclude, “Oh my gosh, we’re married.” It seems America’s favorite ’90s onscreen Goth couple might have made a commitment they never knew about. Sounds like the makings of a perfect rom-com.
Francis Ford Coppola has confirmed this. Per The Guardian:
After filming concluded, Coppola said he was unhappy with a stylised version of the scene and decided that “having the real wedding ceremony as it might be in that religion [Greek Orthodox Christianity] would be beautiful”.
He then filmed a ceremony in a Greek Orthodox church in Los Angeles with a real priest. “This is pretty authentic and I think very beautiful, because we actually did the ceremony and had the priest do the ceremony.,” Coppola said. “So in a sense, when we were all done, we realised that Keanu and Winona really are married as a result of this scene and this ceremony.”
That’s good enough for me. Winona and Keanu are married. FACTS. I will be seeing the movie anyway, married or not. Look at them together. I love them forever. I love her in her t-shirt and blazer and black loafers with white shoelaces. WHY CAN’T THEY BE IN LOVE FOR REAL FOR REAL?!
We posted the trailer for Destination Wedding a while back. Here are two new clips from the movie that explain more about their characters.
I’m totally going on Friday. I might make it a triple special. Destination Wedding first. Then my fourth viewing of Crazy Rich Asians, right after. Then home for To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before again, and again, and again.
