Cathy and Heathcliff for Chanel
It was announced a couple of weeks ago that Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi will star as Cathy and Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights. But first they’re co-starring in a new ad for Chanel No 5.
I know this is supposed to be exciting because it’s Margot and it’s Jacob and the internet loves both of them, separately, but I’m not sure how much enthusiasm there is for the two of them together, especially as those characters. And in the commercial, they don’t actually share the screen. We’re supposed to want them to finally meet in the end…
… but they don’t end up meeting and, like, I’m not sad about it. I wasn’t all that horny for them to meet from the jump and I’m definitely not pining for it now, the way romance should work. So it’ll be interesting to see how they can fire up the chemistry for the film. Because right now? It ain’t it.
But you could also say that about Margot and Chanel. The partnership is intact and I’m happy for her that she’s still getting paid but it’s not a secret that this is one of the biggest celebrity + brand flops in terms of cultural value. Nobody gets hard over Margot in Chanel and this commercial is giving the same energy, or lack thereof. Is there anyone out there who sees Margot as a Chanel No 5 woman?!
Maybe this will change when the house appoints a new creative director. Right now, the position is still vacant, we’re going on half a year now, with so many changes in the fashion industry. Kim Jones just left Fendi and the rumour is that Pierpaolo Piccioli (who left Valentino last year) will be his successor. Jones will stay at Dior menswear, for now, but there’s speculation that he’ll soon oversee both womenswear and menswear or leave altogether. And we still haven’t heard what John Galliano will do but his departure from Margiela is imminent. Is he headed for Fendi next? Will he return to Dior? Or will could it actually be Chanel?
