Dear Gossips,
JK Rowling told Emma Watson that Hermione and Ron really shouldn’t have ended up together. And that, when the story was over, it really should have been Hermione and Harry. What she’s not saying is how Hermione would have eventually gotten there. And what would have happened in between. Between Hogwarts and Harry (eventually), what would Hermione’s life have been like? Definitely not the straight line between high school sweetheart to marriage and children.
Well, she created them so of course she’s right. With all that curiosity, how could Hermione not have wanted more experiences, more variety, more lovers, more…MORE.
"I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That's how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron. I know, I'm sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I'm absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people's hearts by saying this? I hope not.”
Not even JK Rowling could resist. You know, that archaic convention that Love has to be Singular. And especially for girls. Then again, that wasn’t the story she was telling. She wasn’t writing YA romance. But I wonder whether or not she isn’t thinking about those gaps years. Between defeating Voldemort and the scene at the end, when they’re seeing off their kids on Platform 9 and ¾, is there something more to say? I can’t decide what I want that answer to be. I feel like the right answer is No.
