PEOPLE reported late yesterday that Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy have ended their engagement with confirmation from her rep:

"Kate and Matt have been separated for some time now. Despite this, they remain very close friends and committed co-parents."

Standard announcement except for the part specifying that it’s been “for some time now”. And that makes sense. Because US Weekly went further, posting on its website that Kate is now with Derek Hough. Apparently they’ve been ballroom dancing together for a while now. And another connection? His sister, Julianne. She and Kate have been close. And they share a publicist, Brad Cafarelli.

So basically what Kate’s side is trying to say is that she and Matt were well over before she and Derek started f-cking. Sure.

Interestingly, all three of them were at the same event last month in support of Goldie Hawn’s charity. She posed with both of them. So either Matt didn’t know or he did and didn’t care. Is Gwyneth Paltrow’s separation civility contagious in the pettiest, bitchiest town in the world? Please.

By the way? Derek Hough?

Downgrade.
.
Sorry.

You can’t tell me Derek Hough, from Dancing With The Stars, is on the same fame level as Kate Hudson. You can’t tell me he’s on the same level as the frontman of a major band.

So what’s happening here? And how long will it happen for? Kate’s pattern has always been short, intense hookups between serious relationships. What’s the next serious relationship then? Can I nominate Chris Martin?
