Anne Hathaway covers UK ELLE in advance of the release of Interstellar, expected to be one of the biggest movies of the season. Um. Sarah emailed me the other telling me it’s over 2 hours and 45 minutes…WHAT??? See that’s going to take an entire day of planning for me. To be able to accommodate an almost 3 hour movie, everything else has to be moved around.
Anyway, the headline making news here is that during the ELLE interview Annie talks about fame and how it affected her:
"This fame thing? F-cked me up for a really long time. I didn't know how to do it; I didn't know how to engage with it; it stressed me out. And people would say, 'You just have to be yourself,' and I was like, 'But I don't know who that is yet!'"
Part of figuring that out involved going dark and existential:
“The thing I’ve learned this past year is to chill out. I think when you’re young and struggling to find yourself, there’s something alluring about the idea of being tortured. Life for me these days is a lot about letting the unknown be wonderful, and letting myself feel safe.”
A lot of them go through that. It reminds me of Keira Knightley. Her early 20s were all about that torture face. Young adult ANGST. You wear the pain like a t-shirt. These days, Keira seems like she’s just kinda let it go. It shows. I’m not convinced Annie’s there yet but she says she is:
"I've realized that I don't need validation from anybody. At all," she says. "I'm not sitting here now worrying, 'What do you think of me?' With all due respect, you seem like a lovely lady, but I don't need you, or anyone else, to like me. And that's so liberating. It's a big reveal, man."
You remember the girl we saw at the Oscars? The girl who TRIED (partly because that f-cker James Franco bailed on her)? That’s kind of what I like about her. So whatever distance she insists she’s found, I wonder if she’s going to lose that too.
The quote I like most about this interview?
What she says about Matthew McConaughey:
“The man speaks in poetry.”
It’s like bong talk all the time with that guy.
"I remember once while we were filming, something got screwed up, and he said to me: 'Look, we can get upset about this, or we can go with it and have a great story for the rest of our lives.'"
