Universal announced yesterday that By The Sea, written and directed by Angelina Jolie, starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, will be released November 13. November is definitely not January. Or February. November is an award season sweet spot. November means the studio might have some award season plans. November also means By The Sea could hit the festival circuit. That means Venice. And/or, hopefully, TIFF. God, please let it be TIFF.
The Jolie also added a statement along with the date confirmation:
"This is a story about a relationship derailed by loss, the tenacity of love, and the path to recovery and acceptance. It has been a privilege to explore these universal human experiences with such a generous and talented cast and crew."
I was initially thinking that she’d take her film to Cannes because the Brange in Cannes has always never disappointed. Maybe it’s because they’re still in post. Or maybe it’s because they don’t want such an extended buildup. You’ll recall, Unbroken was being called a contender even before she’d finished editing it. You don’t want to be a frontrunner coming out of Cannes anymore. Seems like the momentum can never be sustained.
