It was announced yesterday that Rihanna has launched Fr8me, her own style and beauty agency. Per THR, Fr8me “assists artists in booking commercials, editorial shoots, ad campaigns and red-carpet gigs”. Several hair and makeup and fashion stylists have already signed on, including Rihanna’s own team.

Rihanna is the one who always surprises us with her choices and her imagination. I don’t have to elaborate on this point. It’s an undisputed fact. Expanding her empire and running an agency that represents style talent totally makes sense. As she explained:

"Hair, makeup and styling play an important role in creativity. I am very involved with that part of my process, so this agency was an organic thing for me to do. We are lucky enough to have some of the best artists at Fr8me. But I also have a soft spot for finding new talent with extraordinary skills!"

You know why I love this? Because Rihanna, one of the most aesthetically aspirational women in the world, puts so much worth in her “glam squad”, she’s decided to invest in them. Profit from them too, obviously. But the investment comes first. She’s also acknowledging that in getting to the point where she’s seen as a style icon, it required collaboration. Which means she didn’t do it alone. She’s acknowledging their contribution in a way that’s so much more than just lip service.

I work in television. And we too have our own “glam squads”. Today I’ve mentioned Jordana, Key Hair on The Social, twice. She and I have been working together almost five years, ever since we met at Duana’s wedding. Whenever I talk about Jordana, I always note her title, “Key Hair”. For those in Jordana’s business, that title is important, because they’ve earned it. It means she’s the head of the Hair Department. Lip service is the only thing I can give to Jordana. I’m not Rihanna. Who f-cking is? But artists like Jordana are critical members of creative teams who often don’t get their due. And in her mind, what Rihanna’s doing here is giving shine to their vitality and their value.
