Intro for January 6, 2025
Dear Gossips,
And… we’re back!
I mean, we are, here at LaineyGossip, but I feel like for Hollywood during this holiday season, there was no break at all. That was not a quiet f-cking December with legal complaints flying around and the Duchess activating her Instagram account and dropping a new trailer and eight year divorces being finalised, all of it leading up to the first weekend of the year and the Golden Globes…
Like, I’m well rested (even though you didn’t ask) but I don’t know if they are. So we have a lot to catch up on over the next few days. But first, of course, the Golden Globes, that mess of a show. Sarah will write more extensively about the Golden Globes production and the shenanigans happening behind the scenes but my point here is about award shows in general. Because as we keep hearing, viewership is going down, the networks and the academies have been anxious about how to maintain interest, how to stay relevant in this time of TikTok and while no one as been able to figure it out, I’ll tell you one thing – what the Golden Globes did last night is NOT it. And that, I think, is what is the most annoying for someone like me, an award show enthusiast. Here we are advocating for the value of award shows and why they can still be great entertainment, and then you have the Golden Globes, reliably, coming in to f-ck it up.
There was so much that was wrong about that event last night. What was right, however, was Shōgun. Shōgun won four Golden Globes – Best Drama, Best Lead Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best Lead Actress for Anna Sawai, all of which were expected. The unexpected win was in the Supporting Actor category and my beloved, Yabushige, played by Tadanobu Asano. And what’s this about a new wave punk band?!

That energy, by the way, continued backstage:

Just a reminder, Shōgun’s awards run isn’t over yet because they still have Critics Choice coming up and also the SAGs. Which means that Tadanobu could once again be up on stage with a trophy because after tonight, I feel like the SAG voters will definitely be paying more attention. So we could very well see another haul for Shōgun in February if/when Hiroyuki, Anna, and Tadanobu contend in the individual categories but also in the ensemble category.
Anna was in custom white Dior and while I liked all the elements, I’m not sure they came together as well as they could have. The back belt straps looked great from the back. You saw them briefly when she got up for her speech – which was barely 25 seconds.

But the straps kinda created some gaping on the sides, which you can see in the shots taken of her in the front, along the ribcage, the material isn’t lying flat.

It’s more noticeable when she’s moving around.

I prefer the Louis Vuitton she had on the night before, when she received the WWD Fashion Newcomer Award. Blue is never my favourite colour but this look on her is beyond.
Maybe this was a fashion sign – that even though, typically, the Sunday night dresses are better than the Saturday night party dresses, the Golden Globes are the exception.
More on this during our coverage. Please check back often during the day to catch up with our posts. And of course let us know your thoughts, message us or join us on Substack at The Squawk.
