The Americans won for best writing in a Drama Series, and my Twitter exploded like it was my birthday and my wedding day both. We got excited, because awards so rarely go the way they’re supposed to, and The Americans won for the best finale of the best season of the best show.    And then Matthew Rhys Full Story

TIFF Review: First Man

First Man, Damien Chazelle’s follow-up to La La Land could not be more different than his previous films. For one thing, First Man is not about music. For another, it is a much bigger production in scope, scale, and imagination, and Chazelle takes to this kind of grandiose filmmaking in a way that recalls other filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg. Full Story

Ryan Gosling is playing Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s new biopic First Man. Claire Foy is playing his wife, Janet Armstrong. The first trailer is premiering tonight during Jimmy Kimmel Live! which explains why Ryan was spotted wearing a spacesuit at the Kimmel studios yesterday.  Ryan doesn’t leave his private paparazzi-less bubble much. Full Story

After David Fincher’s English-language adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo didn’t set the world on fire—it might not be a “major Fincher” but it’s a damn good movie—it became clear that Sony was going to do something new with the potential franchise. Full Story

Steven Soderbergh’s iPhone experiment

While Steven Soderbergh’s latest, Unsane, is undeniably schlocky, Soderbergh is one of those filmmakers who can lean into trash and come up with something with actual heft (another member of this club is Jeremy Saulnier). Working from a script from Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer—the duo’s last credit is Jackie Chan’s 2010 caper The Spy Next Door and they are also responsible for the Larry the Cable Guy movie, so this is a change of gear—Soderbergh keeps Unsane as stripped down and simple as possible. Full Story

The next two seasons of The Crown will feature an older cast as Queen Elizabeth and her family move into the 1970s (WHO WILL PLAY DIANA). Olivia Colman is taking over as QEII, and after a rather long casting period, Tobias Menzies of Outlander fame has just been confirmed as the new Prince Phillip (he’s also currently on The Terror which is half amazing and half misery porn). Full Story

I enjoyed season one of The Crown for the most part, especially the domestic drama happening behind closed doors at Buckingham Palace. So I am incredibly into the trailer for season two, which is almost entirely tidbits about the domestic drama that went down in the 1960s. Full Story

They love Claire Foy and so do I

Herewith, I eat crow: I did not think Claire Foy was going to win, and I told Lainey as much. Yes, yes, people love The Crown, and obviously John Lithgow because that …shoulder-hump prosthetic is amazing as it is, but I didn’t think that the mousy Queen Elizabeth, who has been wide-eyed but, you know, not so much a firecracker (I’m only halfway done the series don’t yell at me) was going to inspire the love of voters in the Screen Actors Guild—though it was kind of an odd category, including Millie Bobby Brown, Thandie Newton, Robin Wright, and She Of All The Expressions Full Story

TV Review: Netflix’s The Crown

Sarah Posted by Sarah at November 7, 2016 16:23:09 November 7, 2016 16:23:09

The Crown is allegedly the most expensive TV show ever made— definitely the most expensive for Netflix to date—and its hefty price tag is obvious from the opening moments of the first episode. Every cent is up there on screen, with locations that take in the plains of South Africa, the shores of Malta, and the drawing rooms and stately apartments of Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, and the other homes of Britain’s royal family. Full Story
