This time they all sing. Even Russell Crowe! And, um, it’s not totally tragic, is it? I mean, I guess having endured Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia everything else is relative, you know? But director Tom Hooper’s strategy here, as we can clearly hear, is to keep it raw.
It’s a raw story, after all.
And his vision is to match the vocals to the emotion and the narrative. His perspective, I assume, is that it would be jarring watching Fantine get abused while complemented by perfect vocals and crisp audio. Obviously I agree with him. Because this is my favourite movie of the year (even though I’ve not seen it yet). It might also be Jacek’s most hated movie this year as he’s tired of my playing and replaying the new preview.
