As part of the home video release of Doctor Strange, Marvel released a clip from Team Thor: Pt. 2, Where Are They Now?, which is the continuing adventures of Thor and his Australian roommate, Darryl. We first met Darryl in Team Thor, Taika Waititi’s shot-on-a-lark mockumentary explaining Thor’s absence from Civil War. And now we get to see even more of Thor and Darryl, particularly Darryl, who displays the patience of a saint in dealing with Thor, who is “technically an illegal alien”, has no money, and thinks getting a servant is the solution to having no money. (The way Chris Hemsworth says, “We’re getting a servant!” is delightful.) This clip is funny, but the whole five minute short is great, especially because Darryl is such a sad-sack Stu. It sort of makes me wish that Thor: Ragnarok was just Thor’s adventures with poor Darryl dragging in his wake.
Right now everyone is hyped on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, especially since it scored a 100 on Marvel’s in-house testing process. It does look good, and I’m looking forward to it, but I’m still more interested in Thor: Ragnarok. It’s the curiosity of seeing what Waititi does with it, whether or not he can save Thor, how bonkers is Cate Blanchett as Hela and Jeff Goldblum—this movie has GOLDBLUM—as the Grandmaster. I don’t really have questions about Guardians because we know what James Gunn can do. Crank it up to eleven, great, that will be fun. But we still know what it is.
But Thor is the Avenger no one has done right, despite having the perfect guy playing him. As this is probably Hemsworth’s last solo film, it’s their last chance to get it right with him. And for that they got Taika Waititi, the guy who can take you from gut-wrenching sadness to hysterical laughter often in the same scene, and who can thread a poignant love story into a surrealist comedy about vampires. Waititi’s work is never just one thing, he has a knack for unexpected combinations and tonal shifts that should not work but, in his hands, do. Obviously, Ragnarok won’t be as silly as Team Thor, but this is what he and Hemsworth did FOR FUN. Can you imagine what they accomplished when they got to work?
