TIFF Review: Molly’s Game

Molly’s Game is Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, but it’s Jessica Chastain’s movie from start to finish. Written by Sorkin, adapted from Molly Bloom’s memoir as the mastermind of the world’s most exclusive poker game, unsurprisingly Molly’s Game is mostly a series of flashy monologues characters spit at each other like they’re in a particularly classy rap battle. Jessica Chastain’s Game
Jessica Chastain does not have an Oscar. I have to double-check this CONSTANTLY. Because it seems like she should have one, yes? Surely she won for The Help? No? Well then she HAD to have gotten one for Zero Dark Thirty. Full Story
A Very Murray Christmas, indeed
On December 4, Bill Murray will attempt to revive the tradition of the celebrity Christmas special with his Netflix special, A Very Murray Christmas. The first trailer has just been released, and it is delightful. Directed by Sofia Coppola, the special stars Murray and a slew of celebrity guests, including Amy Poehler, Julie White (judging you if you don’t know her), Rashida Jones, Miley Cyrus, Michael Cera, and George Clooney. Inside 2 weeks! Are you ready? The Arrested Development Season 4 official trailer is now available online. Gob, for some reason, but I guess he doesn’t really need a reason, is doing leg kicks on stage in a towel now. And Buster... Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-maaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was I the only one totally delighted to see that Kitty Sanchez was featured so prominently? And, amazingly, not in the way you’d expect? Or is that too risqué for a trailer? So, are we marathon-ing this together on May 26 on Netflix or what? Like I said before, I propose we start at midnight. Full Story
The Bluths are back!
Neilson Barnard
If you’ve been reading this site for a while, now in its third look!, you know how I feel about Arrested Development. Am still angry that people were too dumb to appreciate its brilliance. For years now, they’ve been teasing us about an Arrested Development reunion/movie/whatever. But while there was always hope, there never seemed to be anything solid. Full Story
What could this possibly be about?
Michael Cera and Tony Danza were filmed going for frozen yoghurt today. …the f-ck? What could this possibly be about? Random sh-t, right? Well, I don’t mean to be mean, but right now, Cera kinda needs any help he can get seeing as Jesse Eisenberg has pretty much killed his value. Scott Pilgrim was a bomb. Full Story
A close cast
Scott Pilgrim vs the World was all over Comic-Con. It was plastered all over the Hilton Bayfront. It was hyped like almost no other feature. And it is also getting a lot, a LOT of love from critics and fans and nerds and herds. They say that Edgar Wright’s (director) work is incredible. They say that the effects and the story are original and resonant and at once entertaining and moving. Full Story
Anna & Edgar in Vancouver
It was a beautiful weekend in Vancouver and Anna Kendrick spent it with her boyfriend Edgar Wright. As I reported several months ago, Anna and Edgar have been dating since filming Scott Pilgrim Vs The World in Toronto. She has great taste. He of course is tight with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, directed them in Shaun of the Dead and Hott Fuzz, which he also co-wrote. Full Story
Michael Cera meets Fight Club
Kinda.Youth In Revolt opens this Friday. And while I know Michael Cera can be tedious and annoying, the Michael Cera who shows up in Youth in Revolt is more than bearable. If you can’t stand to stand in line for Avatar and if Daybreakers isn’t your thing, Youth in Revolt is worthy of your time this weekend. Full Story
Michael Cera sucks
And there is no pleasure in saying this. Because he’s supposed to be a sweet kid…when he’s not flailing his ego about and pissing on the movie version of the tv show that made him. But it’s true. Michael Cera’s Paper Heart ate it at Sundance. Touted as one of the most highly anticipated films at the film festival, Paper Heart ended up falling flat. Full Story
