One Fox movie that Disney didn’t sh-tcan after taking control of the studio earlier this year is Free Guy, a Ryan Reynolds project in which he plays Guy, a non-player character in a video game who gains sentience. The first trailer for Free Guy is here, and it looks like a classic Ryan Reynolds movie. Full Story

New York Comic-Con has begun, starting the hype train for projects that weren’t ready in time for San Diego Comic-Con. This includes Free Guy, the mostly-under-the-radar action comedy Ryan Reynolds shot over the summer with Night at the Museum and Stranger Things director Shawn Levy. (Free Guy is written by the guy who wrote the “hot Santa who f-cks Full Story

Coming off the deeply unsuccessful and unpleasant finale of his X-Men run, Michael Fassbender is joining Taika Waititi’s next movie, Next Goal Wins. Based on a documentary of the same name, the movie is about a Dutch coach, Thomas Rongen (presumably to be played by Fassbender), who tries to turn the American Samoa soccer team into winners. Full Story

After playing in the Marvel sandbox, Taika Waititi returns to his natural state, making films with a precise blend of comedy, drama, and pathos. His latest is Jojo Rabbit, in which he becomes the latest filmmaker to satirize Hitler since Charlie Chaplin first did it in 1940s in The Great Dictator. (In that film, Chaplin plays both a Hitler analog and a persecuted Jewish barber, so I don’t know why some people are acting shocked that a filmmaker would dare portray a fictionalized version of Hitler, this is a long cinematic tradition. Full Story

Kristen Stewart is kind of a TIFF regular. I interviewed her here last year for JT LeRoy. She was here for Certain Women in 2016 and Equals in 2015 and On the Road in 2012. There are probably more but you get the point – she knows the festival and she’s familiar enough with the city that she has a few go-to places. Full Story

Robert Pattinson was one of the MVPs of the TIFF party circuit this weekend. He was among the people everybody wanted to get some face time with, and then did, and appeared to be in really great spirits the whole time…although, when you're schmoozing with Taika Waititi and Chris Evans, who’s not going to be feeling it? Especially if Taika wants to rest his head on your shoulder? And Riz Ahmed is around? Or Shamier Anderson?          Full Story

It’s not a good time to be a Nazi

Ahead of its TIFF premiere, a new trailer for Jojo Rabbit has been released, which doubles down on the satirical tone of the teaser. There are lots of “bumbling idiots” hijinks, and Taika Waititi is in bright blue contacts as Imaginary Friend Hitler which is a GREAT touch, a subtle reminder that the real Hitler looked nothing like his Aryan ideal. Full Story

I have not been 100% sold on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+. Mainly it’s an issue of money, with more and more streaming services coming online, the savings of cord-cutting are being wiped out. But also I don’t have kids so about two-thirds of the potential content on that platform is not really interesting to me. Full Story

Two Internet Boyfriends go out for lunch

Lainey Posted by Lainey at August 19, 2019 17:41:07 August 19, 2019 17:41:07

Taiki Waititi and Ryan Gosling were seen out for lunch together this weekend. You can imagine the reaction, even though they were apparently joined by other friends. They’re both internet boyfriends. They’re also both popular with nerds – Taika via his association with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Ryan because of Blade Runner most recently and, in general, he’s an actor who’s accumulated cool points across several demographics. Full Story
