Taraji P Henson was named Best Actress in a Drama Series last night at the Critics’ Choice TV Awards. As you know, Empire was arguably the most successful series premiere of the season. And the critics have been quick to honour new talent and creativity – they were the first (and few) to recognise Tatiana Maslany’s work in Orphan Black.
Will it be the same at the Emmy Awards? Will it be as diverse at the Emmys? The Critics’ Choice list was certainly encouraging. Transparent took two awards. Bessie won for Best TV Movie, David Oyelowo won Best Actor In A Movie or Limited Series, and even though Jane The Virgin was shut out of its three categories, Gina Rodriguez was one of the most celebrated stars on the carpet. That’s not to say there’s not more work to do – of course, always. But the Emmys? They just don’t feel like this. Click here for the full Critics’ Choice TV Awards list.
As for Cookie and Empire, season 2 will premiere on September 23 and will be expanded to 18 episodes.
