A smattering of Cannes fashion
The Cannes Film Festival ends this weekend, which means it’s time for that annual end-of-Cannes event, the amFAR Gala. As we’ve mentioned several times over the last couple weeks, the fest’s new dress code rules, targeting “naked and voluminous” dresses, has maybe contributed to a rather boring year of Croisette fashion.
But amFAR is an off-fest event, which means those rules don’t apply, and Paris Jackson showed up in a sheer gown that looks like Edwardian meets outer space.

I don’t LOVE it, but this year’s fest fashion has been so mid I’ll TAKE it. Do we think the off-Croisette sheer is a statement, not unlike Dakota Johnson’s naked dress at the similarly off-fest Women in Motion event? Is it dress coincidence or dress conspiracy?
Other amFAR standouts including Taraji P. Henson, Ciara, and Colman Domingo in a patterned Valentino suit:
There were some other people there who I shall not name because they don’t deserve it, but one went to space recently and nothing of note was accomplished.
There are also still premieres happening at the fest. Elle Fanning, always worth observing during events like Cannes, turned up to the premiere of Sentimental Value in custom Armani Prive.
I like this a lot. She usually goes full princess at Cannes, but this is a sleeker, bombshell look, which also works very well on her, though the flowers keep it in her princessy lane. At the photocall, she went much more casual, in jeans and a headscarf:

Cute! Also rocking interesting headwear is John C. Reilly, who wore a big dumb hat to the photocall of Heads or Tails?.

Heads or Tails? is an Italian-set western in which Reilly plays Buffalo Bill. He wears a big dumb hat in the movie, too, so this is John C. Reilly theme dressing. In this case, it’s working to draw attention to a smaller film at the festival, which I had never heard of until John C. Reilly showed up in a big dumb hat. Theme dressing works best as a shameless ploy for attention? Discuss.
