One of the topics of conversation heading into Cannes this year was about the dress code and the festival’s policy on the naked dress, effectively banning it from the red carpets at the Palais, along with gowns that are too big. We haven’t seen too many so-called violations but here’s Dakota Johnson in a naked dress in Cannes, just not at the premiere. We’ll come back to this in a minute.
For the premiere Dakota wore Gucci – not a surprise given her longtime association with the house – a pink, fringed and strapless column right in her aesthetic wheelhouse. The colour works great with her darker hair; I feel like this is one or two shades deeper than usual, right?
Also in her wheelhouse though is the naked dress. She’s given us years of naked dressing at premieres and award shows and I wonder, since the naked dress has been part of the conversation in Cannes, whether or not Dakota’s choice to wear a naked dress specifically to the Women in Motion event was its own fashion statement? Why is it that women are always being policed for what they’re wearing?

In other fashion from Cannes, Sarah mentioned earlier that Cannes fashion has seemed muted this year and for the most part I agree, but here’s my best so far: Zhou Ye in a white Alexis Mabille dress with a foldover neckline and exposed bra.
The key to the look, though, is the necklace. The pearls and the stones mixed together in a choker that loosens towards the clavicle. I don't normally pay that much attention to jewellery but this is a showstopper and I hope that it’s also an excellent example of jewellery styling, that it doesn’t come like this, but styled that way to make it the centerpiece of the whole look. It’s stunning!
