All the Best Actresses
As noted, if there is a so-called must-attend event on the award circuit, it’s Governors Awards. This is the Oscar Academy’s event to hand out honorary Oscars, so many voters are in the room, there is no campaign strategist who wouldn’t be encouraging a contender to be there. That’s why the gala is so well-attended, maybe even more well-attended than the Oscars proper because by the time of the Oscars, the nominees are set, obviously, but at the Governors Awards, the long list is still in the game. In the race for Best Actress, then, all of them who are in the conversation were present and accounted for last night.
We’ll start with the presumed frontrunners, the three women who are considered by experts to be safely in the top three out of five nominations: Jessie Buckley, Cynthia Erivo, and Renate Reinsve.
Right now, Jessie is in the lead and before we look at her outfit from last night, let me just show you what Jessie wore the last time she was at the actual Oscars a couple of years ago representing Women Talking:
This is what Jessie is capable of… when she’s not a frontrunner, LOL. If she goes all the way, I wonder which version of her we’ll see where the fashion is concerned. Last night she opted for quiet luxury – this is The Row.

Cynthia Erivo, meanwhile, went with Givenchy, an extravagant off-the-shoulder robe, standout colour is green for Elphaba, of course.
As for Renate Reinsve, she’s a Louis Vuitton ambassador and LV has worked out well for her, better than Emma Stone lately. This leather dress is wonderful – and is the descendant of Ayo Edebiri’s leather LV from the Emmys, remember?
As for the remaining two spots for Best Actress nominations, and speaking of Emma Stone, as a two-time winner and five-time nominee, you can’t count her out. Especially not when she wants it. If she’s showing up to this event, she wants it – and she may know that she won’t be the winner, but right now, the flex for her is being at this point in her career and loading up on the nominations.
Emma, no surprise, is in Louis Vuitton and it’s fine.

Her best friend Jennifer Lawrence, on the other hand, looks really f-cking great in Dior. It’s a new era at Dior with Jonathan Anderson and the impact has been immediate. JLaw is feeling the sh-t out of herself in this goddess gown, and it suits her perfectly.

If the nominations were announced today though, according to the pundits, Rose Byrne’s name would show up before JLaw’s. Rose has been working it for months and the reason why prognosticators keep talking about her is because her film, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, is by comparison not as hyped as the other contenders’ projects, but her performance is so strong, she has stayed in the conversation.
Rose was in custom Calvin Klein, and I love it, the simplicity of it – on brand for CK, it’s a beachy slip dress, but made fancy in sequins, with pockets.

Amanda Seyfried has been steadily picking up momentum for her work in The Testament of Ann Lee and, in general, how impressive and consistent her performances have been over the last few years. She was one of several best actress contenders in Valentino – and hers was probably the best one. But… like… it’s kinda the same old from Alessandro Michele, it’s just Valentino now and not Gucci.
Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman are about to go into a full court press for Song Sung Blue and whoever’s running this campaign is extremely connected because they’ve been leaving room for Kate on the predictions lists since September. She too wore Valentino by Alessandro Michele and it’s the exactly the kind of dress that makes me eyeroll his sh-t. He was doing this for Gucci in 2017, there’s nothing fresh about what he’s bringing right now.

If it were up to me and Sarah, Tessa Thompson would be in the top five for best actress contenders for her performance in Hedda. Unfortunately she’s sitting in probably eighth or ninth, though there’s still time. Tessa is one of three actresses in the race to wear Valentino last night – a classic red dress, inoffensive but also, like, kinda not up to what we know she can serve on a red carpet.

And finally, the two youngest hopefuls in the best actress category, starting with Sydney Sweeney. Christy flopping at the box office didn’t help her chances but I don’t think it was a fatal blow. She does, after all, have some powerful connections who can work the group chats. Sydney is a Miu Miu ambassador and this is one of the best Miu Miu red carpet looks I’ve seen on her but it’s so firmly in her wheelhouse, they’re all starting to blur together.

The ingenue who’s coming in with the strongest energy though, because she’s in a film that could win Best Picture after securing what could be over a dozen nominations, is Chase Infiniti. This has been a stunning debut award season for her. Wayman + Micah are styling her, every time she steps out it’s been a moment. And this Louis Vuitton is a showstopper – it’s Cinderella Swan Lake, it’s exactly the right look for the breakout star of the year, Hollywood’s new princess. If this is what she’s throwing down in November, I can’t f-cking wait to see what’s coming.
