I don’t usually love a red dress, but there have been a lot of really good red dresses on the award circuit this season and a couple of outstanding red dresses last night at the SAGs.

At first I thought Anna Sawai in custom Armani Privé would be the one and only. Because my GOD she is breathtaking. But it’s also the design elements – this is the most… MOST… she’s been on a red carpet and I think there’s some intention here. As she emotionally said on stage when she was named Best Drama Series Actress, this was the final event in the Shōgun award season run and she marked it with the most auspicious colour in Japanese culture anchored by black in the back. Black to signify the closing of one chapter … and red, the rising sun, from the Land of the Rising Sun, for the next chapter. Also bodice works like armor, fitting for the show’s story. And the beading is exquisite.

But then Danielle Deadwyler arrived. Also custom, for her Louis Vuitton. A confection, a marvel of construction, it’s both original and inspired – Marie Antoinette and Elizabethan – and it doesn’t f-cking matter if it’s practical or not, this is a big swing and it not only worked, it soared.

Which is why Monica Barbaro’s dress, even with the deep plunge, is almost subtle in comparison to the previous two reds. Monica was just announced as Dior’s latest ambassador ahead of the SAGs so it wasn’t a surprise to see her in Dior here and it’ll probably be Dior for the Oscars too. The partnership is off to a great start – she looks amazing.

Now to the gossip…

PEOPLE broke the story on Friday, Monica and Andrew Garfield are “quietly dating”. They were seen together watching Jonathan Bailey in Richard II the day before, on February 20. People who saw them posted on socials.

So the timeline here is that once they were observed out in the wild, one of their publicists presumably signed off on an unofficial confirmation in PEOPLE, pointing to how the two have been hanging out at various industry events since the beginning of January. Which is funny because the last time there was speculation about Andrew’s love life, it was a month ago and something something about him staying with Demi Moore in Idaho. It was an unverified tip that was shared at DeuxMoi that has since, obviously, turned out to be not true. Monica and Andrew, however, given that the story was placed in PEOPLE, are much more legit. At least in the sense that, as we all know, it’s not getting in PEOPLE if the reps don’t know. I’m very high on this couple. So much so that I think they might be endgame. You?
