The Time 100 Gala happened last night in New York as Ariana DeBose continues her remarkable year. She is the reigning SAG, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe, and Oscar winner, basically running the table during award season. So of course she’s on the list of the 100 most influential people. And she’s not done: on Sunday Ariana will host the Tony Awards. She, of course, started her career in theatre. As she tells PEOPLE, “she admits she "never thought" she would be the one from the Broadway community to represent theatrical artists in the mainstream. "Not the girl from the ensemble!" she says. "But I think it's cool that it is."
The Tony Awards will be a partnership for Ariana and her girlfriend Sue Makkoo this weekend. Sue is a costume designer and she designed the costumes we’ll see on Sunday during the opening number. A proper Broadway power couple!
As for Ariana’s look last night – the dress is Oscar de la Renta, one of several looks she’ll be serving in the days to come as we approach Tony weekend.
Earlier this week she was in a glorious white Givenchy suit for Tony Awards promotion.
The Time 100 gala was hosted last night by Simu Liu, also one of the honourees. At one point he offered Bill Gates bubble tea. And on the red carpet he and Taika Waititi played each other’s dates.
An edited version of the show will be broadcast on Sunday at the same time as the Tonys.
