Abbott Elementary’s big moment

I don’t want to give anything away, but if you know the scene, then you know the dress Janine was wearing – it’s actually two pieces.

These stripes are very Staud and the top was on sale this week but I haven’t found any available sizes.

Dakota Johnson – again!

The photos of Dakota Johnson from the set of Materialists are of serious interest to people who have asked for Dakota Johnson’s hat, coat, jeans etc. Will this be the best-dressed film of the year (which is a thing I just made up)? What’s attracting so many people to the looks is that it’s about regular clothing – denim, sneakers, a hoodie wrapped around the waist. A couture gown is a special thing, but it’s not tangible. Most of us need to visit a museum to get near a couture gown – the whole point is its inaccessibility. Not even money guarantees one access (fashion houses keep lists of who to sell to, which means that they also probably keep lists on who not to sell to). The gowns we so often see celebrities in are meant to be looked at, not lived in. With the pap shots, Dakota is in costume but it looks like real life. Billy Crystal’s chunky knit When Harry Met Sally sweater is a costume but it looks like the comfort piece of a recent divorcee. That’s the trick of it – it looks great on camera, but it also looks real. Nothing takes me out of a movie or TV show faster than an out-of-place wardrobe piece, like a broke college student in a very expensive winter coat or someone struggling in their new career wearing $1000 leather jacket (two examples I’ve seen recently). It’s like when women on soap operas wake up in full hair and makeup.

For Materialists, all the credit then goes to the costume designer Katina Danabassis (Past Lives, Bodies Bodies Bodies and Booksmart are a few of her credits). As for the Dakota Johnson pieces, this fan site does a great job of tracking them all down.

Ayo Edebiri’s smart shirt

Speaking of expensive stuff, Ayo Edebiri is a new fashion It Girl and her profile for Vanity Fair keeps giving. I was asked about her pencil shirt and it’s Schiaparelli and I can’t even find a price, that’s how expensive it is. A tuxedo shirt is listed as £2800 so how much is the pencil? I have no idea.

This is a situation where expensive clothes make sense – it’s bougie ground zero, Vanity Fair. Now if Ayo was wearing this as Syd on The Bear I’d be like, come on now.

Wedding season with Lady Gaga

There’s some pap shots of Lady Gaga at her sister’s wedding (and I have no idea why paps would stake this out to get photos of her – seems invasive and weird considering her sister is not a celebrity). Gaga hasn’t complained, except to go on TikTok and clarify she is not pregnant (OMG let’s end the tyranny of bump watch please!). So it’s wedding season and I was asked about her peachy, flowing bridesmaid dress for someone getting married next season. It’s custom, designed by her sister Natali. I did not find this on my own; the Little Monsters are a devoted set of fans who have a great eye for her fashion. Overall a very sweet fandom.
