Beyoncé is Beyoncé. And because Beyoncé is Beyoncé, she can hold on to the mic for as long as she wants. There are few people Beyoncé has to take the mic for and pass the mic to. One of those people would be Diana Ross.
Diana Ross performing her own birthday celebration at the Grammys six weeks before her birthday is one of my favourite moments in a year that has given us very little to enjoy at face value. Yesterday was Diana Ross’s 75th birthday. There was a big party. A lot of celebrities were there. Of course Leonardo DiCaprio was there. And so was Beyoncé. At one point during the night, Tracee Ellis Ross called out for Beyoncé:
"Beyoncé? Are you still here? Do you want to sing 'Happy Birthday?' Come on down!"
Look. You can’t just call for Beyoncé and order her to sing. If an ordinary person did that, Julius would have them thrown out before the request was finished coming out of their mouth. But this is Diana Ross. For Diana Ross, Beyoncé will be summoned and Beyoncé will oblige. She’s not going to just sing for anyone.

You know what I love about this? It’s Beyoncé. Like normally to get Beyoncé to sing at your party, it’ll cost you at least a million plus travel expenses. And even still, Miss Ross can’t NOT add her own vocals to it. And basically takes back the mic from Beyoncé as soon as she possibility can – because when Miss Ross is in the f-cking room, only Miss Ross should be holding the f-cking mic. Which is why she wouldn’t let anyone else tribute her at the Grammys.
It’s been a quiet month for Beyoncé since she and Jay-Z held their Oscar party, the best party of the night. Note that there still haven’t been any unauthorised shots released from that event and B herself has yet to show us what she looked like. In fact it’s been over a month since she’s given us an outfit photo. The most recent activity on her Instagram is promotion for Solange. What’s she up to? What’s she planning?
Next month will mark the one year anniversary of Beychella and the three year anniversary of Lemonade. Is it time yet? Is it time for something new? Well, we’re getting closer to the time of The Lion King. I wonder if she’ll want to capitalise on that and give us whatever it is that she’s been working on then… or if she’ll be spacing it out. So far, in all the early promo for The Lion King, they’ve held back on the Beyoncé. We haven’t heard what she’ll sound like as Nala. We’ve only seen her name appear in the credits. This, of course, is strategic. This is going to be a beast of a movie so there’s no concern about its blockbuster potential. But, for sure, one of the biggest intrigues is Beyoncé’s involvement. And you don’t play that ace until you’re good and ready.
