Beyoncé skips the dinner

Last week, in this post about all the anticipation over Beyoncé co-chairing the Met Gala this year, I mentioned that it is now tradition for Met Gala co-chairs and certain members of the host committee to attend a pre-event dinner at Anna Wintour’s. But that if there is anyone who doesn’t have to adhere to tradition, it would be Beyoncé. And, indeed, she was a no-show.

Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams were there, as was Zoë Kravitz and also Sabrina Carpenter, plus so many others. But Beyoncé has not yet, at the time of this writing, been seen in New York. And, knowing her, likely will not be seen until she arrives at the Met Gala in whatever elaborate outfit she’s been planning for months, for maximum impact. If she even decides to go at all. It’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility. Who can ever truly know what Beyoncé is up to? All we do know is that she is, without question, the main character of the Met Gala this year – because of who she is, of course, but also because she has always been one of the best at building the mystery and anticipation. Being seen before the big moment lessens the effect of the Big Moment.

For now, then, while we wait to see what, exactly, Beyoncé has been cooking, a quick word on Nicole Kidman who is clearly in the mood to be outside right now because not only was she at Anna’s last night but she also went to a party at the Bezos’s on Saturday in a black suit. After tonight it’ll be three straight nights of partying for Nicole – as the old fashioned saying goes, she’s single and she’s ready to mingle. And maybe do shots with Rihanna.

Serena Williams was also at both parties on Saturday and Sunday night. Anna has been a Serena stan for a long time, because she loves tennis so much, so it’s not at all surprising that the Williams sisters have such a big presence this year. What’s notable here, for those who’ve been wondering, is that Alexis Ohanian was with Serena on Saturday night – no worries then about how they’re doing.

As for Law Roach, he was a guest at the Bezos party but in an interview with ELLE that was shared ahead of the Met Gala, he said that “It’s one of the first times in my career that going to the Met is about me”, which some are interpreting to mean that he’s not styling anyone for the event. And if that read is accurate, it would mean that Zendaya isn’t going and that he’s not responsible for whatever Lauren Sánchez Bezos will be wearing.
