What Else?
The Alien: Romulus premiere was last night and Cailee Spaeny and the cast delivered with their looks. This is both fashion and on theme with the film but not so obviously on theme that it’s overkill. In fact it’s so subtle you probably won’t notice. By the way, I was made to watch 30 minutes of this movie for work and I do not f-ck with horror and it f-cked me up. Those facehuggers – why give it such a cute name when it’s the most goddamn terrifying sh-t ever?! (GoFugYourself)
Ryan Murphy has made a series about Aaron Hernandez and it premieres in September. Dustin Rowles writes that he will “watch the sh-t out of [it] and feel guilty” and… same, Dustin, same. I too don’t have much faith that Ryan, given what productions are usually like, will treat this story with nuance and objectivity. If you haven’t already, there’s a podcast that does a great job of unpacking and analysing Aaron Hernandez’s career and crimes in the context of football culture in general. Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc is six compelling and well-researched episodes and if you’re going to watch Ryan’s show, I recommend you get to the podcast first. (Pajiba)
Jacek and I watched Inside the Mind of a Dog last night on Netflix. Not surprisingly, we loved it and I can’t be truly objective about this film or the subject because, well, we share a home with two dogs and the main characters of this movie are good boys and girls so how could I possibly not think it’s the best?! There’s a line from the film, “survival of the friendliest is really the most successful evolutionary strategy” which is about how dogs evolved from wolves and got INTO OUR HOMES, because they figured out that being friendly is the way to achieve closeness and, therefore, secure care and protection. And it’s a lesson that humans can take away from the species, right? We don’t f-cking deserve dogs. Anyway, on that note, here’s a piece by Kelly Conaboy about the evolving language related to pets – and the words “pets” itself may not be a word we use in the future when talking about the animals we live with. How do you refer to yourself in relation to your dog or cat or rabbit or guinea pig or whatever animal it is that lives with you? (The Cut)
A couple of weeks ago, JD Vance made headlines about child-free women and the value that we don’t bring to society. Now we’re hearing about his apparent views on post-menopausal women and the value that they can bring to society. I am currently in perimenopause. I do not have children, by choice, and therefore obviously do not have grandchildren. So, obviously, in a few years, I will be useless. Sorry everybody. (Celebitchy)
Jordan Chiles has released a statement about the mess over her bronze medal. She’s heartbroken over the situation but also traumatised because of the racist harassment that she’s experienced. But she also says she’ll continue with dignity and integrity. It’s a beautiful message. (Teen Vogue)
