It’s so good to see Martin Short, last night at the premiere of his upcoming documentary, Marty, Life is Short, premiering on Netflix next week. And he was there with his family and so many of his friends. Well now I’m crying already.

The film is directed by his good friend Lawrence Kasdan and features never-before-seen archive videos and interviews with so many people who have worked with Marty over the years, so many comedy legends, Canadian comedy legends, including Catherine O’Hara (sob!), talking about why Marty is such a treasure, what he’s brought to the business, what he puts into his life and what he adds to others, and how he keeps living with joy. Because, as is made clear in the title, life IS short. And for Martin Short, this works in many ways.

His name is Short. He is short, an attribute he’s turned into a comedic asset. And on a deeper level, he’s been through it, experiencing so much pain due to the shortness of life, which he knows heartbreakingly and intimately well – losing friends, his wife, and most recently his daughter, far earlier than he would ever have expected to.

Somehow, though, he keeps finding ways to laugh and reliably continues to make everyone else laugh. Of course his community showed up for him. Eugene Levy was there last night, Billy Crystal, Andrea Martin, Dennis Miller, Kate Hudson, whose family has been tight with Marty’s for decades; Kate grew up spending her summers in Muskoka, Ontario, where Marty has also had a place forever.

Also Selena Gomez who showed up in a delightful black Carolina Herrera dress – I love the puff shoulders but also how they come in, just slightly, at the neck.

She had a cute moment with Marty on the carpet, the two of them holding hands in mutual appreciation.

And she promoted the documentary on Instagram with her considerable reach.

Selena, Marty, and Steve Martin will be together soon enough, because word is season six of Only Murders in the Building is expected to begin production this month in London. Marty, Life is Short will be on Netflix starting May 12.
