This morning, Lainey wrote about the teaser for Carly Rae Jepsen’s new single “Party For One”. She was hyping us up for the full drop. Well, it’s here and it’s classic Carly: infectious, joyful, and a certified BOP. A good pop song is catchy but a great one— the ones that Carly constantly delivers – is also full of lyrics that are so relatable you want them to be your anthem. You want to sing along with recognition. “Party For One” is a great pop song with brilliantly relatable lyrics.
Earlier this year, a study came out that “younger millennials” don’t go out anymore. I am a Younger Millennial (I’m so young) and I endorse this message. Leaving the house is overrated. I reluctantly go out if I have to during the summer months. Now that winter is coming in COLD, I’m ready for my hibernation months. I’m ready to be back on my Netflix and chill with myself beat. “Back on my beat” is the line in “Party For One” that you won’t be able to get out of your head.
I'll just dance for myself
Back on my beat
I'll be the one
If you don't care about me
Making love to myself
Back on my beat
I’m going to be singing this all day. Apologies in advance to my desk-mates. Also, I love a good pop song about pleasuring yourself. More love for self-love! Carly says that “Party For One” is a good indicator of themes we’ll see on her new album, which she confirmed is coming in 2019.
“This song represents a lot of what this album is about for me which is romantic love but self-love too… To me ‘Party For One’ is an anthem of what it is to celebrate time with yourself, which is a hard thing for people to really enjoy sometimes, and it’s something I’m learning to do more and more.”
I don’t relate to having to learn to love being by myself – I might love it too much –but I’m sure a lot of people do. And it’s a nice sentiment that we don’t normally see in pop songs, that it’s OK to be alone. That being alone is AWESOME and sometimes way more fun than hanging out with other people or leaving your couch. “Party For One” is just in time for “if I go home I’m not coming back out” season. Can we figure out how to keep this same energy year round?
Carly’s last album, Emotion, was a critical darling. It was on every music blog’s Best Of lists. It made Carly a gay icon and a legit popstar to music nerds, even if it was more slept on than it should have been by the mainstream. If this single is any indication, the new album is going to be even more deserving of praise. Carly Rae is officially back on her beat. Here’s the super cute new video for “Party For One” to prove it.
