While some celebrity beauty lines are struggling (like Goop), Scarlett Johansson’s The Outset is expanding and retailing on Amazon. The micro polish is good, I’ve restocked on it a few times.
Kylie Kelce’s podcast is an instant hit but I think she’s about to experience her first bout of backlash for saying she always arranges childcare for when she is not home, even if her husband is supposed to be there. The story is about a week old but gaining traction online (which is pretty much never a good thing). She said it’s to ensure she is covered (which I understandable – if she didn’t do it, it wouldn’t get done) and that his schedule is worse now than when he played professionally bzecause there’s no structure. With three kids and another on the way, it’s more surprising that they don’t have help there all the time. Arranging babysitters for an unpredictable day is way more work than a consistent nanny.
Welp, Polo has dropped with a whimper, not a bang. There haven’t been many reviews (which is odd?) but the Guardian and Telegraph agree it’s a bore. And worse yet, no one is talking about it. Even the Variety interview with the showrunner is kind of boring.
In As Seen On Social Media, I’m always talking about the “lost middle” of fashion like the Gap. The once-powerful mall brands (like J.Crew) that used to make really solid pieces but those brands went through a major dip. Trying to course-correct requires a focus on quality. I don’t think it’s the former haute-couture designers who are going to democratize fashion but that’s what the fashion industry needs to tell itself. The cover story is interesting but the cover is so dire – it’s drab and dated. The barrel curls and the morose expressions, it’s so lifeless. And it’s not the clothes! Gisele models jeans. There are dozens of magazine covers with models in variation of these clothes and it’s not boring.
This is a digital December cover (which is why it came out so far into the month) but it looks like a January cover. January is the least exciting month in fashion and I wonder if this was the plan for January and they bumped it for something else.
Since the Jay-Z statement, Roc Nation has posted 13 photos to their grid. That pushes it down, and it’s not pinned. This seems purposeful, business as usual.
