Celebrity Social Media, October 10, 2024
Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton are back and banking on nostalgia. And I can appreciate that they are least trying to address their fallout. Way back when, their friendship split was obvious and they didn’t film together for a season.
In hindsight, they say it was a blip and overblown by the media. They were in their 20s, living super dramatic lives and their careers were so intertwined that the split was necessary for them to evolve to the next stage of their career. Forty-year friendships are complicated but was the fallout really that simple? They are giving us nothing and a great example of two celebrities who are not stuck at the age they became famous. They’ve learned what to reveal and what to withhold.
Bad gossip is abundant right now and I would love to point to TikTok and say “leave it to the professionals, kids!” but that would be disingenuous. There has always been bad gossip; it just used to be in print and readily available at the grocery store. And there is still bad gossip from online publications. I already wrote about Page Six implying something about Justin Timberlake and Estee Stanley, until you actually read the article and realize her husband was also with them. But this headline got picked up and has been spun into a reason for him cancelling a recent show. Big sigh.
First off, cancelling a show is a major decision that triggers an insurance claim, this is not something any artist does lightly and say what we will, but Justin has been doing this a long time and isn’t known to be unreliable. Second, her husband was there! Third, even if her husband was not there, as far as I know Justin is not Mike Pence. He is allowed to be in the presence of women who are not his wife. Am I saying he’s trustworthy or a great husband? No, but we need to hold ourselves to a higher gossip standard.
After a breakout season, the buzz around the Love Island USA cast has died down considerably, even though the favourite couples are still together. This isn’t like Selling Sunset or The Bachelor (with its multiple spinoffs); there’s not a lot of opportunity for this cast to continue filming together for TV. The ones who have maintained a public profile have the best PR and the best social media managers. Leah definitely has a good PR person and has managed to retain the fan favourite energy.
I don’t know if Jessica Chastain is one to tweet-and-delete but she complained about Jet Blue, then posted a screenshot of a conversation with customer service, then continued the conversation. Justified reaction or Karen behaviour? I’m really torn because we know how airlines are and how terrible air travel has become (it’s not your imagination, it is getting worse) but does an Oscar winner complaining about the in-flight entertainment system make it better, or does it just garner her special attention?
