Roommates …with pedigree
Roommates releases on Netflix on Friday with Sadie Sandler and Chloe East in the lead roles and Sarah Sherman, Natasha Lyonne, Nick Kroll, Storm Reid, Janeane Garofalo, and Martin Herlihy, among others, rounding out the supporting cast.
There are a lot of notable names here, and the premiere last night would have already been an event, but it was that much more of an Event with the attendance of three major names in comedy: Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, and Chris Rock.

Sadie is the Sandman’s daughter, this is her first starring role – so her dad came to support her, with his famous friends, who also brought their daughters, Bella Murphy (who also has a part in the movie) and Zahra Rock. Honestly? I appreciate how no one is bothering to pretend that the connections don’t exist here – including the Netflix connection because all three, Eddie, Adam and Chris have their own Netflix deals.
So, of course, the headline here is that three comedy legends made a rare-ish appearance in support of their children, but don’t let that be the only thing you take away from this post. Because Roommates was directed by Chandler Levack, a rising talent behind the camera. She’s from Toronto, and here in Canada we’ve been waiting for this moment for a few years now, tracking her work from when she was an emerging filmmaker debuting her first feature through the Discovery program at TIFF. And look at her now…
Sharing the pink carpet in Hollywood with Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, and Chris Rock at the premiere of a new movie she directed. But it’s not even the only movie she has coming out this week!
Chandler’s other film, Mile End Kicks, which she wrote and directed, starring Barbie Ferreira, which first screened at TIFF last September, opens in Canada on Friday.
Here’s the trailer for Mile End Kicks.
This is probably a week that Chandler could not possibly have ever imagined – but it’s real, it’s actually happening for her, and I can’t wait to see her build on this momentum.
Final note – my favourite look from this premiere: Sarah Sherman. Her hair is amazing, this blue set fits her perfectly, and dialing it up so extra with the eye makeup and the blue lips works for her too. Style should be about the individual, and from top to bottom, this is just so HER. I love it.
