Daniel Dae Kim is a Tony Award nominee! He’s the first ever AAPI performer to be nominated in the lead actor in a play category… on the first day of Asian Heritage Month in Canada and AAPI Month the United States! Daniel is being recognised for his performance in Yellowface.
Meanwhile, Good Night, and Good Luck and Othello are doing big business on Broadway. Good Night, and Good Luck is George Clooney and Grant Heslov and the production was not nominated for Best Play when the Tony nominations were announced today but George did get a nomination for Best Actor in a Play.
Othello, however, was completely shut out. Both Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal were left off the ballot and the play wasn’t recognised either, though it has been getting mixed reviews. It’s fine – both Good Night, and Good Luck and Othello, as noted, are making a lot of money, nobody loses here.
While Jake’s snub isn’t entirely shocking, one of the most surprising snubs coming out of the Tony Award nominations was Kieran Culkin for Glengarry Glen Ross. Everyone was just out here assuming that Kieran would be on the path to the Triple Crown – Emmy, Oscar, Tony – in the shortest amount of time in history, like 18 months. It’ll have to be a little longer because Kieran didn’t come up; it’s a crowded season, there’s always so much talent on Broadway, but I also wonder if Kieran fatigue might be setting in. Personally I don’t find his award show triumphs all that endearing.
What else happened today…
Jonelle Awomoyi is a journalist with the BBC and she shares her story about what happened when she had a bad hair day and went viral. (Refinery 29)
Larry David doesn’t sound all that enthusiastic about the last time he hosted Saturday Night Live. He’s capable of enthusiasm though, usually when he’s complaining, and he is complaining here…but his heart doesn’t seem to be into it. Is he running out of things to complain about? From a fellow complainer, right here, that’s me, I can do it until I run out of breath, this doesn’t seem possible for him. (Pajiba)
Sarah was just saying the other day that the Thunderbolts* hype has seemed muted in the months leading up to the release. Not these last two weeks, though. The Bolts are everywhere in so many different outfits I’m not even worried about linking to these ones because I know there will still be more for Sarah when she posts her review tomorrow. (Go Fug Yourself)
Bill Belichick has released a statement about his now too-highly-publicised f-ckup of an interview on CBS Sunday Morning and it also reads as a defence of his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson who he says was “simply doing her job”. Wait… her job? She’s officially employed by him? No, no, don’t answer that. I don’t want to know. I know too much about this mess and also, I have a hard time telling her apart from Hilaria Baldwin, does anyone else have this problem? (Celebitchy)
Jordon has apparently been acquiring a lot of property since she and Bill started dating. (The Cut)
