Diego: Andor and TIME
Diego Luna is among those on the TIME 100 list, in the Artists category, with an endorsement written by his best friend, Gael Garcia Bernal.
Theirs is a decades-long friendship – we met them of course in Y tu mamá también, a f-cking classic, and they recently starred together in Hulu’s first ever Spanish language series, La Máquina, that premiered last fall. I was assigned to the virtual junket for that show, interviewed them together, which was such a trip considering how much I love Y tu mamá también. The love between them is real, they’ve been through the struggle and disappointments and heartbreak of this business and have been able to find success on their own terms and also together.
Diego is currently promoting season two of Andor. I just interviewed him again on that junket this week. He told me that Andor is a very personal project for him, as both an actor and a producer on the series. And it’s especially emotional now that the second season brings Cassian’s character full circle. This is not a spoiler, everybody knows where they were headed with this show (except Jimmy Kimmel).
Earlier this week, Diego was on with Jimmy Kimmel and told a great story about how he was gifted with Cassian’s blaster, obviously a prop from set, after the series wrapped production. And he had it in his luggage when he was travelling… and was stopped while going through security. I love the way he tells this.
Andor season two premieres on Disney+ next Tuesday.
What else happened today…
The Emmys have a host…and this is the safest choice possible that somehow also isn’t annoyingly safe. (Pajiba)
I linked in this space on Monday to Bryce Dallas Howard’s adorable dog sweater and she’s keeping with that trend in a dress with birds on it. Not quite as fun but she looks lovely and also I just put together that she’s promoting a documentary about pets. Are we going to bitch about this example of theme dressing or are we good with it? I’m good! (Go Fug Yourself)
Speaking of animals, I am now sobbing while I’m writing this because I just read about the mother elephants huddling during an earthquake to help the young ones and… f-ck me we do not deserve these creatures. (Celebitchy)
Meghann Fahy’s movie Drop came out last week and Caroline Siede writes that it’s a loving homage to a movie that came out 20 years ago starring Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy. Remember Red Eye? (AV Club)
Tom Green spoke to Vulture about being Canadian and a comedian and what Americans don’t understand about us, and why that’s important, especially right now. I don’t agree with all his points, but I appreciate that he’s sharing his perspective based on his experience. (Vulture)
