The new Mr. & Mrs. Smith series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine drops on Prime Video on Friday. The premiere was last night in Brooklyn, with stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, Mr. and Mrs. Smith themselves, joined by showrunner Francesca Sloane, as well as co-stars John Turturro, Parker Posey, Michaela Coel, and Eiza Gonzalez. Director Hiro Murai was also there, but what’s really got me hung up are the couples.
First, Glover stepped out with his partner, Michelle White (they were also out walking around New York earlier in the day). They generally keep their relationship and their family—they have three young children—under wraps. Like, the last time I remember seeing Michelle White, she had blonde hair. I didn’t recognize her for a second with the black bob.
Second, there is Maya Erskine and her fiancé, Michael Angarano, whom you might remember as Kristen Stewart’s pre-Pattinson boyfriend. I think I knew in some corner of my mind that Erskine and Angarano were together, but I had forgotten until I saw these photos of them from last night. Also, it will be a big reunion, of sorts, as Angarano is directing both KStew and Erskine in the upcoming film, Sacramento.
Maybe it’s good new for Mr. & Mrs. Smith that there’s already such a couple vibe around the show? Although I have to say, once again a shocking lack of chemistry from the leads of a project being billed as sexy and romantic. I’m getting a roommate vibe from Glover and Erskine in all the clips and trailers. Donald Glover talked about he and Erskine not doing a chemistry read before working together and…yeah, I can tell.
