The wedding of the year is here
Yesterday it was a “save the date” announcement, today it’s a teaser trailer, The Drama starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya is coming this spring. As Lainey mentioned, a lot of people got it into their heads this would be a rom-com because…I assume they’ve never seen a film by Kristoffer Borgli before, the name wasn’t enough of a tip-off. Also, people love rom-coms and want more of them in theaters, so every movie with even halfway romantic vibes is immediately set upon as a rom-com, even if the trailers, etc, make it clear it’s not (see also: Materialists).
The teaser for The Drama does lean into comedy, with Charlie (Pattinson) and Emma (Zendaya) getting their engagement photos done and it’s awkward and strange and Charlie’s smile is, well, imagine if Edward Cullen had to sit through engagement photos. He looks like he wants to melt through the floor. Interspersed with that are quick flashes of Charlie and Emma’s relationship and wedding day, including Emma chugging bourbon in a wedding dress and Charlie with a bloody nose. Drama! And it reminds me of Lars von Trier’s nightmare wedding film, Melancholia. What is it with Scandinavians and messy weddings?
But The Drama is not NOT funny. So far, Borgli’s work has been a mix of comedy and drama and outright strangeness, and The Drama is definitely serving those vibes. I am into it mainly because I will watch either of these actors do anything, let alone star together in a film from a very intriguing and creative filmmaker. Borgli never goes where you expect, so whatever you think The Drama is, it won’t be that, or it will, but it will also be something else.
Assuming no changes, April 2026 will be jam packed for Zendaya, with The Drama premiering in theaters while Euphoria season three comes to our living rooms that same month. Then, as we know, she’s off to the races with a triptych of huge movies that ensure she will dominate the conversation all year long, with what I assume will be a series of powerhouse red carpet appearances.
But first comes The Drama. First, we must survive The Wedding.
