Hannah Einbinder: Great Reviews and Asymmetrical Skirts

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, winning the Queer Palm. The film was acquired by MUBI (which managed The Substance two years ago through an excellent award season including a Best Picture Oscar nomination) and opens today in the United States and next week in Canada.

The reviews have been outstanding – 99% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, and Vulture has now proclaimed that we are in the Dawn of Director Jane Schoenbrun. There’s been a lot of excitement the last few months about Curry Barker and Kane Parsons over Obsession and Backrooms and, hopefully, the same enthusiasm will follow Jane as a wider audience will be exposed to their style, their taste, their artistic vision.

Hannah Einbinder was in New York this week promoting Camp Miasma, doing interviews, making appearances, and posting videos of herself splattered in blood…but in her underwear, pulling off gross and horny at the same time.

What’s even better is Hannah’s post-Hacks flex: wrapping up one of the most successful post-COVID series and nailing the landing, then immediately starring in an acclaimed genre film from one of the brightest emerging directors of their generation. This is some serious game.

And excellent fashion too. This is the fit she had on at the TODAY show earlier in the week. The top and skirt are Loewe and it’s the skirt, really, that does it for me. Peplum, asymmetrical, checked…it’s doing the most, but somehow doesn’t feel like too much. If you’re down to drop almost $3000 on it, you can find it here.

I’m not in the market at that price point, but the asymmetrical skirt will definitely be in my life for the next several months. It’ll be a big trend through the end of the year, like late 90s and early 2000s vibes, and I’ve already worn or tried on several for ETALK as we approach our new season.

Retailers are currently still turning over inventory from summer to fall so I’ll probably do another post about this in a couple of months when there are even more available but there are already very cute asymmetrical options out there. Including from my favourite brand Sacai. I wore the Gray Suiting & Nylon Twill Midi Skirt earlier this summer and it’s a beauty. Also over 50% off right now but low on sizes.

Sacai does a lot of asymmetrical, it’s a brand constant, and I also wore the Multicolour Horizontal Stripe Midi Skirt to host an event in June that isn’t technically asymmetrical but the pleats give it the illusion. This one is also on sale, also low in sizes, but that’s a really good price point for this brand.

I haven’t worn this next one yet but I’ve asked our stylist to pull it for me on a style loan for TIFF – the Vivienne Westwood Zora Asymmetric Pleated Checked Twill Mini Skirt. Like, look at her. She’s short, so we’re trying it a size up, but it’ll work with so many top and shoe options. An investment for sure with that price tag but this one is pretty special. Even Jacek commented on it when I asked to plug in the code for this post.

More reasonably priced, and also longer – the Gracie Ruched Asymmetric Plaid Skirt is straight out of 1997 and we’ll be seeing so much more of it. You can wear it with a t-shirt until it gets cold, then a slouchy sweater through the winter. I love the length and the hem.

Anthropologie has a really cute one too: the Basque-Waist Ruffled High-Low Maxi Skirt has a high cut on one side, with a ruffle trim, and it’s flattering through the hips. I tried it on with a short-sleeved hoodie and combat boots, SO good.

Here’s another one we’re keeping on the rack from Anthropologie – the En Elly Maxi skirt, not asymmetrical in the hem but you’ll note that the ruffles on the hips create an interesting shape from the pleat along both sides of the body, that really surprised me. I paired this skirt with ruched brown high boots and a top that’s similar to the one the model has on but with sleeves.  

Wolf & Badger’s Denim Asymmetrical Skirt is a dream. Elastic waistband, kinda giving harem, but also reminds me of Japanese fashion, I am obsessed with how the folds fall in the back, and I like the weight of it, because it feels substantial but still moves really well.

Now for a couple of shorter options, Sandro’s Studded Knit Skirt isn’t usually my lane because it’s a bit clingy, but it’s just so well designed with the embellishment that even further accentuates the hem. We tested it under an oversized black blazer and it’s a winner.

AllSaints is really taking it back to the 2000s with the Luana Asymmetric Leather Mini Skirt – this is so Kate Moss and Sienna Miller coded from that time. And the leather is soft, not heavy, so I felt quite comfortable in it, moving around wasn’t an issue.

Back to the longer ones – the Banana Republic Crepe Asymmetrical Wrap Midi Skirt is sooooo pretty and light, it felt like there were scarves floating around my body. Super versatile, too. Works in the summer, will work in the fall and in the winter over a pair of tights and under a sweater. And you can also take her to work and dinner.

But if we’re really rocking with that 90s grunge thing, Mo&Co’s Asymmetrical Hem Plaid Skirt nails it. This is a perfect throwback, under a denim jacket and high-tops, or Timberlands when it’s cold. I think I’m keeping it.

And I might be keeping this final one too, it’s basically the energy that Bella and Gigi Hadid are bringing this summer - Kimchi Blue’s Jessica Asymmetric Low-Rise Midi Skirt. I might have worn a skirt like this 25 years ago, so it’s fully come back around. The material feels like the softest t-shirt. Will save it for when it gets colder, under an oversized turtleneck sweater. Also it’s $79.
