Mariko, Toranaga, and… Yabushige!
Emmy nominations voting starts tomorrow so we’re down to the final stages of nominations campaigning and the most acclaimed series of 2024 is bringing out their MVPs.
There was a Shōgun FYC event yesterday in LA with Lord Toranaga himself, Hiroyuki Sanada, making an appearance. Hiroyuki has been pretty quiet the last couple of months, keeping a low profile since the series’ release, saving his energy perhaps, as Toranaga-sama would do, for the big moments.
Here he is, the coolest MF in every room, alongside Anna Sawai, in a beautiful off-the-shoulder floral dress. Both Hiroyuki and Anna are considered frontrunners for nominations in the lead acting drama categories and, frankly, even though you don’t want to leave anything to chance, those nominations should be secure. Because they are actually the frontrunners to WIN. A lot of people have been watching Shōgun, the ratings are huge, and their performances are … like… if you’ve watched the show, I don’t have to explain the quality of it to you. As mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Shōgun has submitted in 40 categories at the Emmys. The show is a major heavyweight, led by Hiroyuki and Anna and…
Yabushige!
Tadanobu Asano joined Hiroyuki and Anna at the FYC event yesterday, in a gorgeous light-coloured trench and looking like a whole snack. That hair, those waves, his SKIN – Yabushige is a Shōgun fan favourite because his character is so complicated and wily and stupid and hilarious. Tadanobu ate every scene he was in, a true scene-stealer for his expressions, his unpredictability, his dumbassery, his exasperation, and the humour.
It's amazing to see him there with the team, and yes, he too has a good chance at a nomination, he should be nominated! Everyone on this show did the most, including producer Eriko Miyagawa. I linked to this piece in Vulture back in April but it’s worth revisiting because she is a huge part of Shōgun’s success, not just as a producer but for her meticulous efforts in making the translation an actual character in the show. She was vital in overseeing the translation process throughout production, from development to filming, and her role and work should not be overlooked.
Team Shōgun is rolling deep into the Emmys, and we love to see it. Squawk with us! (app link here)
