A Holiday Rom-Con…rad
It was announced a couple of weeks ago that production has started on Clashing Through the Snow, starring Christopher Briney and Michelle Randolph. From the title alone, of course it’s a holiday rom-com, a classic enemies to lovers situation as two co-workers end up having to share a rental car to New York during the most wonderful time of the year. I’m in. This is exactly what I need in December – two attractive people pretending not to be attracted to each other until they cannot deny that they are attracted to each other, as the bells jingle in the background.
Just need them to stop saying that this is being marketed as Planes, Trains, and Automobiles for the youth. Stop it. Because if it’s for the youth, well, just make it new, something specifically for their generation, without drawing comparisons to one of the most beloved holiday classic comedies from a previous generation.
On that note, let’s keep the focus on this new project with two actors who find themselves at a similar stage in their career trajectories. Michelle Randolph has broken out from The Landman and I like this move, lining up a rom-com on a streamer (Prime Video) in her first leading film role in a bid, perhaps, to be the Cameron Diaz for Gen Z. She’s currently dating Glen Powell and this kinda sorta parallels a similar career strategy for him with Set It Up on Netflix, also a rom-com that was workplace related.
As for Christopher Briney, he’s best known for playing Conrad Fisher in The Summer I Turned Pretty series which, of course, blew the f-ck up last summer during the final season. Audiences are familiar with him as a romantic interest, and he’s obviously doubling down on that for his first project since breaking out in TSITP. And adding some comedy in there to showcase the range since Conrad was… well… kinda one colour: grey. Already looking forward to this – make it light and breezy and sexy, let’s go full hate to love trope on this, give me the arguing as foreplay, gradually dialing up the intensity before the first makeout session, before they regret it but then get so horny they go for it again, and then a big blowout fight where they say mean things to each other but ending up pining so hard just in time for a Christmas miracle.
What else happened today…
The Summer I Turned Pretty is about to have a successor. And it’s a series adapted from the work of another Canadian romance author who writes about fictional hockey players. They’re not queer, but they’re definitely horny. I’ve read three of Elle Kennedy’s Off Campus novels and now that the first series is coming – also airing on Prime like TSITP – Teen Vogue has an exclusive preview. Not unlike Heated Rivalry, by the way, because the piece was also written by Max Gao who is Canadian, based in Toronto. Congratulations Max! Off Campus is wayyyyy steamier than TSITP. I need this show to deliver on that. (Teen Vogue)
Our very own Kathleen Newman-Bremang was at the Oscars on Sunday – as in she had a ticket inside, for the third year in a row, reporting for Refinery29. We were writing together on Sunday night which is now a tradition. If you’ve been reading this site over the years, and were around when Kathleen was a writer here, you know she had declared Michael B Jordan her husband years ago. So, yes, she was very emotional (she is always emotional) about his Oscar. Here’s her piece on why he deserved it. (Refinery 29)
Kate Mara in monochrome brown leather and there’s a ruffle on these shorts that… I’m not mad at. Wait. It’s a playsuit – that’s actually even better. (Go Fug Yourself)
Michael Fassbender thought Zach Braff was Dax Shepard and I can see it. But my takeaway from this story is that these are three men that I really never wanted in a casserole. (Pajiba)
Baseball is back! That was a great game last night for the World Baseball Classic featuring several current and former Blue Jays. And now we’re just a week away from the start of the new MLB season. Here’s Anthony Dabbundo’s on the sports' growing global popularity. (The Ringer)
