That’s the polite way of saying it: “insatiable curiosity”, a euphemism for the, um, drip that materialises whenever Aaron Pierre shows up. He can be the classy one, I’ll be over here in the gutter.

The expression is his own, “insatiable curiosity” is how he’s chosen to answer a question about how life is right now. So he’s actually describing himself and not everyone else’s reaction to him. Which, by the way, is how GQ Hype decided to word it, right on the cover: THIRST.

I like the double entendre, if anyone’s actually reading the piece, because there’s the thirst for him by us, and then there’s the thirst from him for life. Because Aaron Pierre, though already famous, is about to become even more famous when Lanterns comes out next week on HBO Max. So he’s on a press tour, talking at length about his career trajectory so far and also about the thirst, the way the internet has responded to him over the last couple of years – so much thirst that comment sections have to be closed.

And still, Aaron has managed, in spite of all that “insatiable curiosity” to remain relatively private. Beyond his relationship with Teyana Taylor and what a heatscore they were together, we don’t know much about much. He’s not a fixture on the scene, he’s not really a part of any celebrity crew, and I think there are a lot of people reading this GQ piece learning for the first time that he’s a father – but all we know is that he has a son. As noted in the article, the child’s name and age have never been disclosed. Some people on the internet have their theories, suggesting that he actively kept this a secret for professional strategy, but here he is, right before what is probably the biggest on-camera role of his career so far, talking about being a parent. But even that part is pretty opaque, so the overall impression that I came away with at least is that he’s successfully hiding in plain sight. There is enough here to fill the page, but not so much that it’s revealing.

What’s emerged instead is that he can do theatre and voice work and action and drama and adult stories and kids stories, he can do it all. He’s thoughtful and polite, a slow talker (which does nothing to diffuse my fantasies), is grateful for all the attention, careful not to see rude or entitled, but has done the work to ground himself because he’s aware that he can’t lose himself. But still… kind of a blank slate which, of course, will definitely be an asset professionally.

Aaron was in New York today doing the talk show rounds and kept it simple with the wardrobe. When you’re him though, like, a white t-shirt over trousers is the perfect outfit, really. Do we really need that much more?

The answer to that is… Kyle Chandler. Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler in Lanterns might destroy us. People are probably ready for the gush that will happen with Aaron on this series. But there are those who are unfamiliar with Kyle’s game because they are young and uninformed. So if we want to talk about thirst, I look forward to the surprise thirst that will be flooding Beyoncé’s internet when they finally understand why some of us have been in love with Kyle Chandler for the last 20 years.
