Introducing Twigs Ortega
Taika Waititi’s new film, Klara and the Sun, hits theaters on October 23. The press tour has started and has already been hijacked by a REAL star: Jenna Ortega’s dog, Twigs. Ortega stars as the eponymous Klara, a robot friend in the future. The movie looks maybe good? Taika’s on a weird streak. His films aren’t as sharp as they were in the last decade, but yet he did incredible work in front of and behind the camera in Our Flag Means Death. It’ll be interesting to see what the combination of Taika, Jenna Ortega, and Amy Adams can accomplish, especially since it feels like Klara has already been lost in the shuffle (October has too many movies).
But back to HER. TWIGS. A sleek black dog. Some kind of greyhound? Whippet? Ortega adopted her while filming Wednesday in Ireland. Twigs is a true celebrity. She knows her angles. She hits her marks.

She is also wonderfully disaffected, done with press, ready for naps.

I love her. I also love that Ortega adopted a black dog, which, like black cats, are often overlooked in shelters due to superstitions. Also, Twigs had some health problems and Ortega didn’t hesitate to take her anyway. She talked about adopting Twigs on Late Night with Seth Myers last year:
I’ve volunteered in enough animal shelters to really appreciate the people who don’t hesitate to adopt animals with health issues and give them great lives. Lucky Twigs. Lucky Jenna! They’re two disaffected stars, cajoling each other through press obligations.

What else happened today…
Daisy Edgar-Jones is walking around New York, doing press for Sense and Sensibility, which is ALSO coming out in October, because distributors absolutely refuse to work together and come up with release schedules that actually make sense. (Go Fug Yourself)
Kelly Clarkson vs the Brooklyn Hipster Art Store is the low-stakes celebrity feud we need. It’s still going. The Art of Play store owner won’t shut up; he’s now accusing Kelly of a “reprehensible abuse of power”.
Hot take: it’s possible two things are true, that a store clerk was rude to Kelly, and she misunderstood that the exact bird automaton on the wall was for sale. I also think it’s entirely possible Molly the Bird was for sale until the store people got too attached to it, and now they use it as a display model and will actually sell you the OTHER automaton bird made by the same artist (thus why the price tag remains in place on the wall). Anyway, there are no winners or losers here except for us, the plebes, who get to laugh at everyone and wonder what a $15,000 automaton bird is like. (Celebitchy)
Zara Larsson and Robyn appeared on Rolling Stone’s “Musicians on Musicians”. Charming! (OMG Blog)
Spooky book recommendations for October! Not your usual horror book recs, these include short stories and novels, and books that are more Gothic and atmospheric than trying to jump scare you from the page. An elegant spooky season reading list, if you will. I especially second the recs for The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones and Her Body and Other Parties, a sci-fi-ish collection of short stories focused on women’s bodies and realities. The story inspired by Law & Order: SVU is incredibly good. (Little Infinite)
