Jennifer Lopez’s kids, Max and Emme, turned 18 yesterday, another reminder that time is the ultimate troll. Howwww are they 18 already?! I’m still back in 2007 when she announced she was pregnant. Up to that point there were rumours for weeks about it, she and Marc Anthony were on tour together at the time. And during the final show she confirmed it – though not the part about having twins – and my gossip brain immediately clocked that the outfit she had on that night was similar to the mint green, one-shoulder dress she wore to the Oscars with Ben Affleck.

I will never not love this Valentino, I loved it the minute I saw it.

Sorry for the fashion detour, let’s get back to that night in Miami, November 2007, when she made official what was then obvious and then three months later the twins were born. Here we are, they’re 18, and she’s marking the milestone on Instagram.

JLo can be polarising, and for whatever reason TikTok seems to hate her. What is less talked about is that she had primary physical custody of her babies, and in the 15 years since she and Marc divorced, those children have mostly been seen with her and seldom with him. Late last year, when the Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban split was reported, with Nicole also having primary custody of their daughters, there was a lot of side-eye directed at Keith for the arrangement. I’m not sure the same awareness applies to JLo.

Here she is yesterday out for lunch with her young adults in one of the biggest dress trends of the year, the slip dress, and she seems to be partial to it since she was just seen at the end of January in a champagne Chloé version. The slip dress started showing up all over the last place last fall – it’s a double throwback, first to the 90s and Drew Barrymore and Kate Moss made it iconic, and then to the 2000s when it was the Nicole Richie, Rachel Zoe, and Sienna Miller uniform.

The slip dress was definitely my thing during the Drew and Kate days, less so more than a decade later, so it’s probably not going to be a look for me in 2026 but I can tell you that slip dresses are all over that racks at the office because the stylists are pulling them for spring shows, whenever the f-ck spring decides to arrive

What I can appreciate about the slip dress is that there is a certain vibe to the look when the slip is worn under a furry coat or a moto jacket or a great denim. And, also, a slip dress doesn’t have to be expensive – and it shouldn’t be expensive. Even if celebrities are swanning around in designer pieces that are exorbitantly priced, the dupes aren’t only comparable, sometimes they’re even better.

JLo’s pink slip dress from yesterday is LoveShackFancy, it costs a lot less than the champagne Chloé from a few weeks ago, and is currently on sale but sizes are going fast as photos of her in it are making their way across social media.

Free People has never not had slip dresses in the inventory, it’s one of their staples, and I just saw someone trying on their Some Kind of Love Maxi Slip, it’s really cute, I love the texture. And I prefer it to JLo’s. Also it’s cheaper.

Aritzia also has several slip dress options right now – the Cannelle Dress comes in pink like JLo’s but without the lace.

If you’re looking for the lace, the Wilfred Lamplight Satin Dress in marcona beige is really pretty. And, you will note, once again less expensive and IMO better than JLo’s.

Anthropologie also has multiple slip dress options right now. These are the two that I’ve seen up close that I also consider to be superior to JLo’s. And both have asymmetrical hems. One comes in grey blue and this red one is actually great, because of that darker patch that comes across the body.

The most affordable ones of them all are at H&M – a dark brown option that’s under $50 and here’s one that I actually tried on, because I loooooooove this print. It’s a polka dot slip dress and the dusty rose against the black lace is irresistible. I’ll probably wear it with some kind of boot the way it’s shown on the model under a stupidly oversized bomber. It too is under $50.

Let me just end by being a hypocrite though because the final option I’m presenting you with is actually more expensive than all the others. But I have to show you the sleeves, I love these sleeves. Reformation’s Serafina Silk Dress comes in two colourways but the lighter one is where you can see those delicate cap sleeves on each shoulder. Pricier for sure, but if you are a slip dress person, this one is pretty special.
