Socialite Amy Griffin is profiled in New York Magazine about The Tell. To recap, Amy wrote The Tell, a memoir about recovered memories of sexual assault in high school. The New York Times then covered The Tell, and brought up a lot of friction in the fact-checking. Amy has since filed a defamation suit against Joleen Altum but not the NYT because they never lose defamation suits. Altum grew up in foster care in the same town as Amy, who came from a popular and very powerful family, and over the years Altum has disclosed her abuse to multiple people, down to the dress she was wearing. In the New York Magazine story, Amy’s friends view her as victim of misogyny, a woman whose only crime is being too privileged, too rich, too perfect. But what’s interesting about the underlying tone is how much Griffin and her supporters criticize Sam Lansky, the ghostwriter (he was also the ghostwriter for Britney Spears’s memoir, he is very sought after). They describe the storytelling as rushed and uneven, too sensationalistic. An interesting criticism, considering that Amy is from an extremely wealthy and well-connected family and at any time could have… asked for another ghostwriter or found another publisher or self-published or asked her many connected literary friends for advice.

When a show like Ride or Die is cancelled, it reminds me of the scene from Barry where a streaming executive played by Elizabeth Perkins talks in circles (“The algorithm felt it wasn't hitting the right taste clusters”) and how the algorithm overrides good ratings and good reviews. Why? No one can quite explain it.
