A Bob Marley biopic is surely a big deal, but it seems like promotion for Bob Marley: One Love has been relatively quiet. The premiere was last night in London, and it brought out star Kingsley Ben-Adir, who plays Marley; Lashana Lynch, who stars as Marley’s wife, Rita; Naomi Cowan, who plays singer Marcia Griffiths; and James Norton, who stars as record producer Chris Blackwell. The premiere also brought out Ziggy Marley, and Idris and Sabrina Elba.

The film looks really good, check it out:

I am a little confused as to why this is a February release. Maybe it’s because Bob Marley’s birthday is February 6, or maybe it’s because February is Black History Month in the US—though the film is rolling out globally all month, so it’s not just a US decision. It just looks good enough that it should be a fall film, hitting the festivals before an October/November release date. A biopic about one of the most iconic musical artists of the 20th century, that should be an automatic Oscar run, right? We can speculate as to why it’s not, but it’s a little disheartening that the Bob Marley biopic feels like a bit of an afterthought during the winter doldrums. Also, on a purely shallow note, can we acknowledge how beautiful Kingsley Ben-Adir looks?
