Kristen Bell was seen this weekend at an estate sale, which gives me a chance to talk about Nobody Wants This. Season two did not deliver the same results as season one. I mean, in my opinion season one was pretty uneven too – but the difference is that the stumbles in the writing didn’t take away from the sparkle of the show. The problem is that season two had no spark, which made the issues in the storytelling that much more obvious. This, then, is the challenge for season three, to see if they can find the magic that made the show a hit in its first season… because the buzz has kinda worn off. And buzzier shows have now taken over the zeitgeist.

Production, however, has just started on the new season – Netflix confirmed it last week and released several new photos of the cast members, including Kristen and Adam Brody, from set; KBell took some of the shots in the carousel.

Are those costumes from the show… or did they just end up in a couple’s outfit coincidentally? There are a lot of stripes happening here and that seems to have carried over into Kristen’s personal life because she’s in a pretty ideal long-sleeve striped tee at that estate sale, which I will use as a segue to get into where my shopping energy has been directed lately: spring and summer stripes.

Here’s my thing about t-shirts: I hate the standard template, like general merch tees, they’re usually cut from a sample and for women, in my opinion, for my preferences, they’re too narrow at the hips. I always, always take a scissor to those t-shirts, so that they fall an inch below where my pants sit. This is because I generally hate tucking a tee and if I don’t tuck, the extra length looks terrible on me pulled over the waist of the pants.

That’s why, for me, a boxy cut and/or an oversized crop is the way to go. You will note, Kristen’s striped top is boxy, hanging loose around the waist, and stopping just past the waistline. This, also, is how I like to wear my clothes, must be a short girl thing.

Since I’m big on 90s jeans (I’m telling you, it’s the best jeans trend this season, Zendaya was just seen in a pair – this is my previous post with 90s jeans recommendations) right now, I’m taking it full body and making striped rugby shirts over 90s jeans my spring/summer uniform. Everything I’ve bought the last two weeks has been striped and preppy.

It actually started in late winter with the most perfect cashmere rugby I’ve ever worn. Gigi Hadid’s Guest in Residence is pricey, I know, but my GOD I love the Layered Stripe Rugby SO much. I have it in the limewash colourway, and on top of the comfort of it, and how fresh the shades are, it’s the fact that it looks like a short-sleeve layered over a long-sleeve, except it’s just one piece. And it doesn’t narrow at the waist and hips, stopping perfectly right where I want it.

Gigi’s rugby is basically why I just want the rest of the year to be all rugby in my wardrobe. So I’ve been looking for multiple short sleeve rugby shirts to wear to work, out for dinner, and to play golf– until October, this is my goal: rugby tops over denim or khakis, period. And the criteria is boxy, no silly hem coming in at the waist, which allows for ventilation during the hot months.

Uniqlo has a good one that’s more of a polo because it has no stripes but I liked this one specifically because of the cut, and it can bridge through April and May in Toronto when it’s still kinda cool. And it’s under $40.

A more expensive option, long sleeve, for the bridge months, is the Smythe rugby and you will note in the product description that the fit is relaxed and is intended to fall at the hip which, again, I can’t stress enough, this is the assignment. It’s not cheap, I know, but this is higher quality if your bank account allows, and the black and pink really pops.

Anthropologie has several rugby options right now, and they get it too because they’re boxy and cropped and if you don’t want it that short, just size up. I looked at the RE/DONE Rugby Crop Polo Top and ended up with the Pilcro Short-Sleeve Polo because the price is better and also that colour is so retro and cute.

If you’re looking for a rugby that’s slightly more elevated, Maeve has a really pretty one in two colourways with a scalloped collar. This one isn’t super boxy but there’s definitely room here, especially if you size up, and it lands exactly where it should at the hip.

I bought the Next rugby in the green/pink stripe, because it’s a brighter warm weather version of the Guest in Residence that I have to put away in the winter box soon – and it’s so much more affordable than Gigi’s brand.

Speaking of affordable, I also bought this one at Urban Planet for just $16. There are several colour combinations but the blue on blue with the white collar is the only one that works for me because that number, 18, is Chinese for “will get rich”, LOL, and besides, the other ones have NY and LA all over them and I’m never putting those cities on my body.

Simons has a short sleeve in three colourways – I got the pink and maroon, it’s boxy and classic. There will be some golf played in this shirt in May, for sure.

And finally, the Tilley Stripe Marine Cropped Polo is marked down from the markdown, I got it for $35 in pink and white, one size up. Tilley is a Canadian brand and their activewear is well-made and reliable. They have a few rugby polo options and also plain tees that aren’t tight to the body. The raingear is very cute too.

See you soon in my only rugby and jeans era.
