The secret screening at the New York Film Festival last night was Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet. This was basically a cinephile’s wet dream – Josh Safdie has a cult following (Uncut Gems) and Timmy, well, you know. But also it’s a major development in the awards race because for months people have been leaving room for Marty Supreme and Timmy in particular in the Best Actor Oscar category. Even though no one had seen Marty Supreme until yesterday, Timmy was on almost all prediction lists for his third nomination, and second in a row. 

 

So … reaction? 

A standing ovation and from everything that I’ve read so far, and not just from fanboys and fangirls, Marty Supreme is a smash hit. Critics from Variety to The Hollywood Reporter to Indiewire are big on this film. 

 

So it’s a proper contender. And it adds to the already intriguing situation at A24 because both Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme and Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine are A24 titles. Right now it’s looking like Marty is the superior film but on the performance side, Dwayne The Rock Johnson is pushing for his first Best Actor nomination. We’ve been anticipating this storyline for months and now that the two films have been seen, this showdown is becoming an even stronger possibility.

As you can see, Gwyneth Paltrow is there. The messaging around Gwyneth’s involvement in the film is, of course, that this is a real acting comeback – and so she’s popping up on prediction lists for the Oscars too. I’m telling you this so that you can brace for the inevitable exhaustion. Our eyes will be hard rolling so much this fall we may need a laser treatment to help with the muscles. 

Now to the gossip. It’s been weeks since Timmy and Kylie Jenner have been seen together. And she was at the screening last night. Kylie was just in Paris for fashion week so she returned to NYC to support him. But she wasn’t a heatscore – people only clocked her presence in backstage footage posted by the film festival. You can see her in the corner.

Contrast this to what happened at the Toronto International Film Festival last month at the premiere of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein when Jacob Elordi pulled up with Olivia Jade Giannulli IN WHITE, putting it on blast that they’d gotten back together.

If a member of the f-cking Kardashian-Jenner family can go low-key at a film festival premiere, Jacob and Olivia can too… but did they actually want to? Remember that the next time Jacob Elordi’s out here bitching about just wanting to be known for his work.
