Lewis Hamilton is the main character at the Australian Grand Prix after making iconic TikTok debut

“Lights out and away we go!”

It’s round one this weekend at the Australian Grand Prix and, as usual, the main character is Lewis Hamilton. This is the case every season but especially this season because, as I’m sure you know, even if you don’t follow Formula 1, he’s now with Ferrari, and Melbourne will be his first race with his new team. Lewis has been saying forever that driving for Ferrari has been his lifelong dream. And we’re close, we are very, very close.

Today was media day in Australia. Surprisingly, Lewis did not rock up in red. Instead, it was a black suit for the first paddock. And the Scuderia Ferrari social media team is all over it, knowing that WLW (What Lewis Wore) is now a race weekend tradition. He turns the track into a runway – that’s not going to change, no matter where his car is parked in the garage.

As for the colour choice, maybe he’s saving the red for Friday. Or maybe he doesn’t want to go to red until it’s the race suit proper. Whenever and whatever, don’t for a second think that he hasn’t planned it. When it comes to his wardrobe, Lewis never f-cks around. Actually, when it comes to almost everything, Lewis doesn’t f-ck around.

Unless, of course, he’s in character. You’ve seen this, right? A truly inspired bit of promotion ahead of his Ferrari debut, stepping into one of the most memorable Ferrari scenes in cinematic and pop culture history. It’s f-cking genius. “I’m a professional” coming from Lewis Hamilton, the GREAT Lewis Hamilton, is instantly iconic. I don’t know WTF Edward Norton is doing here but his presence adds to the chaotic genius of this reimagining.

And … bonus… Lewis just joined TikTok, with this as his TikTok premiere, pretty much the best TikTok first post of all time.

This is such a fun way to kick off this new era – and it’s been fun since day one. I can’t be the only one who’s noticed that over these last few months, Lewis has seemed lighter, the second oldest driver in the paddock but somehow like a kid again. The energy is radiating out of him, it’s happiest he’s been in years. Hopefully this car lives up to his expectations. I’m so anxious about this weekend for him, it’s like he knew we needed the Ferris Bueller moment for the stress relief.

Keeping with that energy, then, something that Stephany from our Substack, The Squawk, shared in our daily chat yesterday. She pulled up this old-ish video from when Lewis was with his most recent former team and when Jennifer Lopez was with her most recent former husband, noting these comments he made on stage.
