Post Emmys, Lily Gladstone is back at work, promoting Fancy Dance, alongside co-star Isabel Deroy-Olson and director Erica Tremblay. The film is now streaming on Apple TV+ and it is very good. They attended a SAG screening in Los Angeles on Monday, as the gears of awards season are starting to grind, and I’m pleased but also surprised to see Apple throwing some money and effort into promoting Fancy Dance. Pleased because the film and these women deserve to have their work considered, but surprised because, frankly, it’s a very small film, the kind that basically needs an audience miracle to break out and build real momentum through awards season.
We’ll see how far Fancy Dance can go. After the fall festivals, the Oscar race is a little clearer—Brady Corbet’s nearly four-hour epic The Brutalist is an early contender, as is Edward Berger’s papal thriller Conclave, Sean Baker’s Anora is in the mix, too, and Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF. It doesn’t have distribution yet, but that should help 1) land a deal, and 2) kick off the Oscar campaign—but it still feels like a wide-open year. There isn’t a “consensus” film yet that everyone agrees is a lock for the top spot. Which is good! It's a lot more fun for us that way. And it leaves some wiggle room for the scrappier films like Fancy Dance.
As for Lily, I just want to point out that she looks amazing in a white and black suit ensemble. I’m a little bummed we didn’t get anything of her and Bowen Yang, co-stars in the upcoming remake of The Wedding Banquet, at the Emmys. I need Lily Gladstone rom-com crumbs! For now, though, I’ll settle for Lily Gladstone in a great suit crumbs.
