One of pop culture’s most high profile beefs has been squashed. High profile because there are two legendary artists: Elton John and Madonna. And they’ve been nasty to each other for over 20 years. Or, rather, Elton’s been nasty to Madonna. For the most part, she’s been much more diplomatic about him – acknowledging that he hated her, for sure, but leaving the insults off the table.

And she was the one who apparently initiated the reconciliation. As she shared on Instagram yesterday, M found out that Elton would be on Saturday Night Live and decided she’d go settle it once and for all. When she went backstage to see him, the first words out of his mouth were, “Forgive me”.

This is what can happen when you get older, and forget what it is that you were mad about in the first place? For some. Not always others. Like sisters Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland who supposedly never reconciled before Joan’s death. In Elton and Madonna’s case, though, clearly neither one was interested in staying mad. Maybe it takes too much energy, I’ll be thinking about this as I age because I can keep a grudge forever, to the point where I think grudging is one of my life forces.

Madonna says that “forgiveness is a powerful tool” and, well, she had a lot to forgive. Because if you recall, Elton had some sh-t to say! It started in 2002 or so when Elton called Madonna’s Bond song “Die Another Day” the “worst Bond tune ever”. Then in 2004 he got up on stage at the Q Awards and made his win about her:

“Madonna, best live act? F-ck off. Since when has lip-syncing been live? Sorry about that, but I think everyone who lip-syncs on stage in public when you pay like 75 quid to see them should be shot. Thank you very much. That’s me off her Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No.”

In 2012, ahead of Madonna’s Super Bowl performance, Elton was asked on Good Morning America if he had any advice for her. His response:

“Make sure you lip-sync good.”

LOOOLLLLLLL, sorry. He’s just such a bitch, it’s hard not to laugh. Also in 2012, Elton was on a talk show in Australia and couldn’t keep Madonna’s name out of his mouth:

“Her tour is a disaster and it couldn’t happen to a bigger c-nt. If Madonna had any common sense, she would have made a record like Ray of Light, stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and made great pop records, which she does brilliantly. But no, she had to prove that she was like … and she looks like a f-cking fairground stripper.”

As they say, it takes a c-nt to know a c-nt. And these two c-nts are now doing the right kind of c-nting. Maybe there will be a c-nty new song in our future.
