Martha Stewart was also at the Bruno Cucinelli event last night in New York and made the most of it, revealing to Variety the title of the biopic that’s in the works about her life, starring Cate Blanchett.

If there were rumours circulating prior to this, they didn’t include the name of the project – so while she’s out here talking about how she’s heard the speculation, probably she knows a lot more than she’s letting on.

Martha is a pro though, she’s been at this and up and down and all around for a while. And this has to be related, at least a little, to RJ Cutler’s documentary about her that was released on Netflix back in 2024. RJ had full access, she participated in it, but she then publicly trashed it, taking exception to the way she was portrayed in the back half, complaining to the New York Times that the shots were terrible and that she looked “like a lonely old lady”, even sh-tting on the music choices in the film.

Not surprising that Martha would be fixated on the aesthetic and not necessarily the substance. So now that a two-time Oscar winner who is also known as a fashion icon is playing her? Please. This is peak Martha, she’s thrilled. She can now say that Cate Blanchett is her answer to Meryl Streep’s Anna Wintour.

As for the actual story of the film, beyond what she looks like, I’m not sure Martha has to worry much because… well… we know about her biggest public scandal and also her minor ones. It was over 20 years ago now. What else could really hurt her? Aside from bad lighting, lol.

Shortly after the event last night, Variety confirmed that the project is moving forward with Cate in the lead role, to be directed by Janicza Bravo who has worked with Cate before on the series Mrs America and whose most notable feature film is Zola – and this adds another layer of excitement to the movie because there’s a wonderful edge to Janicza’s work and also… a Black director making a film about the whitest of white women might give this story a texture we may not have considered or expected.
